RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College women's volleyball team had an opportunity to avenge a loss earlier this season at Dominican University. However, the second seeded Stars narrowly defeated the third seed Eagles 3-0. The Eagles were in each set, but could not get over the hump, falling 25-21, 26-24, 25-23.
Dominican (25-9) jumped out early and took a 14-11 lead before the Eagles started to comeback.
Lindsey Swansby sparked an Edgewood College run with a kill to bring senior
Kim Lueck to the service line. Lueck then served seven straight Eagle points with
Mallory Palmer notching two kills on the run to give the Eagles a 19-14 lead. However, the Stars turned their play up a notch, only allowing the Eagles (19-14) to score two points the rest of the way, taking the set 25-21.
The second set was played tight as neither team lead by more than four points in the set.
Sam Himmelspach registered her only kill of the match to get the Eagles back within a point at 15-14 before the Stars went on a run. Dominican ran off four straight points before
Jessica Martin stopped the run with one of her 10 kills in the match. Palmer cut the deficit to one with a kill before a Star attack error tied the set at 23. The teams then traded points before the Stars won the final two points to take the set 26-24.
Just like the second set, the third set was played close, again with neither team leading by more than four points. After being tied at seven the Stars opened up a three point lead, only to see the Eagles come back to tie the set at 11. Dominican opened up a pair of four point leads at 17-13 and 18-14, but it evaporated as the Eagles came back once again to tie the set at 19. Trailing 23-21, Palmer started to bring the Eagles back with a kill before a Star attack error tied the set at 23. Nevertheless, just as they did earlier, the Stars had an answer. Jessica Gallagher put Dominican up and Claire Dezelski ended the match with the Stars 10th ace of the match.
Dominican's Darcy Kammeier led all hitters with 15 kills while Dezelski came in second with 12 kills. Palmer led Edgewood College with 11 while
Lindsey Swansby handed out 27 assists in the 3-0 defeat.
Senior, Lueck compiled a match-high 23 digs in the final match of her career. She finishes her career with 1,594 digs in her career, which ranks her second on Edgewood College's all-time list.
