Gusties take down Eagles in NCAA Tournament First Round

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Women's Volleyball kicked off their third-straight NCAA Tournament Thursday. They took on the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties in a First Round matchup. The Gusties (24-7) got the better of the Eagles (25-7), ending their season with a 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-18, 25-16) defeat.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gustavus Adolphus jumped ahead 6-2 early as Edgewood University struggled to make up the gap. A 9-3 run from the Gusties pushed them further in the lead 19-10 as they claimed a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
- The two teams jockeyed for position in the second frame, but the Eagles struck first with a 7-3 run for an 14-8 edge. Edgewood University kept the Gustavus Adolphus attack at bay and evened the match on a 6-1 run.
 
- After the Gusties pulled ahead with a 6-1 run in the third set, a 4-1 answer from the Eagles left them up 10-9. After the squads battled to a 14-14 draw, Gustavus Adolphus recorded a 4-0 run to claim an 18-14 advantage. The Gusties finished off the set strong, a 6-1 rally clinching a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
- The fourth set started off well for Edgewood University, five in a row putting them ahead 8-5. An 11-1 rally from Gustavus Adolphus flipped the script and all but put away the set and match in favor of the Gusties.
   
- Gustavus Adolphus had a .138-to-.035 edge in hitting percentage in a defensive slugfest. The Gusties recorded a 106-to-91 advantage in digs.
 
- Katie Borchert earned a 10-kill, 13-dig double-double. Nida Zukauskaite posted 10 kills as well.
 
- Mia Hinkamper tallied 23 digs, while Jennacy Wille recorded 13 digs.
 
- Kate Gunderson had 17 assists while Payton Millin finished with a match-high six blocks.
 
- Maren Sundberg and Ava Hahn paced Gustavus Adolphus with 25 digs each.
 
- Leah Berg had a match-high 15 kills. Sahara Morken recorded 35 assists as she fueled a Gusties attack that featured three players with double-digit kills.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Hinkamper crossed 1,000 career digs as an Eagle in the defeat.
   
- The set two victory was the first set victory in a NCAA Tournament match in program history.
 
UP NEXT
Edgewood University finishes the season 25-7 with the defeat. The Eagles recorded a 16-match win streak as they earned their third-straight NACC Tournament Championship and appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The season saw several career milestones reached, as well as five players being voted All-NACC. Borchert earned NACC Player of the Year and First Team All-Region. Edgewood University recorded their most conference wins in program history and an undefeated NACC season.
