Eagles soar to first tournament win since 2003

GLEN ELLYN, Ill. – After Edgewood College's strong regular season in conference play, they faced the challenge of playing tri-conference champion Benedictine University in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. When it was all said and done, the Eagles from Edgewood College came away with the upset in four sets for their first conference tournament win since 2003.

Edgewood College (16-16) started slow as they fell behind Benedictine (16-16) early, by the score of 17-10. They fought back and got the set to 23-18 with Kristin Manske coming to the service line. Manske served the next six points and gave Edgewood College a 24-23 lead. The teams exchanged points and were tied at 26 when Brittany Bylsma drilled one of her three kills to give the advantage to Edgewood College. Senior Nina Brown gave Edgewood College the comeback victory when she pounded home one of her eight kills in the match. For the set, Edgewood College pounded out 19 kills in the set and accumulated an attack percentage of .405.

In the second set, Edgewood College would again come from behind to take the set as their offense continued to roll. This time they were only down by three points, 9-6, and came back to take a 14-11 lead to force a Benedictine timeout. Edgewood College maintained their three point lead at 19-16 and with Ellie Peckham serving, the Eagles ran off five straight points to take a 24-16 lead after a solo block by Abbi Schultz. The Eagles took the set on a service error by Benedictine to take a commanding 2-0 lead.


After Edgewood College struggled in the third set as Benedictine won the set 25-12. Edgewood College bounced back nicely in the fourth set as their offense came back to form in the 25-14 victory. Edgewood College controlled the set from beginning to end as they never trailed in the set.

Edgewood College played well from beginning to end as they did a nice job of reading the Eagle defense and finding holes. Mallory Palmer found many holes in Benedictine's defense as she led the team with 12 kills and she hit .429 and did not have a single attacking error all night. Schultz was not far behind Palmer as she tallied 9 kills in the match. Palmer also led the team with 18 digs. For Benedictine, Kayla Leyden recorded a match high 19 kills.

The win was Edgewood College's first conference tournament win since 2003 when they defeated Concordia University Wisconsin as members of the Lake Michigan Conference.

Edgewood College will continue conference tournament play in the semifinals on Thursday when they travel to Sheboygan to face the No. 2 seed Lakeland College. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
