Box Score 2 ELMHURST, Ill. – The Edgewood College volleyball team ventured into the territory of a couple of the region's best teams, but couldn't escape the Elmhurst College Invitational with a victory. The Eagles dropped their opening match to the 19th-ranked host school 26-24, 25-22, 25-22 and then almost completed a comeback from 2-0 down before falling to Wheaton College (Ill.) 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 14-25, 15-11.
Emily Chaussee led Edgewood College (1-3) with nine kills against the Bluejays, while Savannah Koester had eight kills against just one error for a team-high hitting percentage of .438. Jordan Winkler served up three service aces and a team-high 13 digs. Haley Schwenn led the Eagles with 16 assists. Elmhurst College (5-0) only hit slightly better than Edgewood College for match, notching .194 against the Eagles .162.
In the second match, Wheaton College (2-2) claimed the first two sets before the Eagles stormed back. In the third set, Chaussee scored kills on three consecutive points to spark a 9-1 Edgewood College run. However, the Eagles trailed 23-21, before scoring the final four points of the set to extend the match. Chaussee, Winkler and Elizabeth Evans all scored kills at the end of the third set.
The Eagles blew away the Thunder in the fourth set, turning a 11-9 deficit into a 25-14 win. Rachel Tesch served the final eight consecutive points of the set. But in the deciding set, the Eagles couldn't answer a 5-1 run from Wheaton which ended the match.
Chaussee recorded 13 kills and a .281 attack percentage to lead the Eagles' offense. Winkler added 11 kills. Schwenn dished out 23 assists, while Tesch led Edgewood College with 28 digs. Renee Meister posted three solo and three assisted blocks as part of 11 total blocks for the Eagles.
Edgewood College's next matches will take place in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Eagles will fly to Boston to participate in the MIT Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 11 and 12. The Eagles first of four matches will be against Babson College on Friday afternoon.
