Box Score 2 AURORA, Ill. – Hits were hard to come by for the Edgewood College softball team on Wednesday night as pitching and windy conditions held the Eagles to just six hits and one run in two games. Edgewood College dropped a close 2-1 contest to Aurora University before being shutout 5-0 in game two.
The Spartans rallied with two outs in the first inning to score a pair of runs on three hits which put the Eagles in an early 2-0 hole. After giving up the pair, starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh settled down and scattered just four hits the rest of the game. It took the sophomore just 78 pitches to cruise through the Aurora lineup. The Spartans threatened again in the fourth, but after fielding a single in centerfield, Carlene DeCoster gunned down Aurora's Logan Cahill who tried to score from second on the play.
DeJongh had a strong outing in the circle, but her efforts were spoiled as Edgewood College (12-15, 4-10 NACC) only pushed across one run. Alexis Unser singled to lead off the third and after Kylie Clark reached on an error, the two stole to put runners at second and third with no one out. Jackie Diesch grounded out to third to score Unser, but that was all the Eagles could muster as Alyssa Schulting grounded out to end the inning. Edgewood College managed just three hits the rest of the game, falling 2-1.
Karlie Klossner has been impressive on the rubber this year and continues to do all she can in the circle, but was yet again left without run support. The sophomore allowed just three earned runs in six innings, but the Eagles were held to only two hits in the game. Aurora scored one in the first inning on a RBI groundout and the rest in the fourth on three hits and an error. Katie Landon and DeJongh accounted for both hits, but neither was supported and the Eagles were shutout for the fourth time this conference season.
Unser picked up two hits on the day, going 2-for-3 in game one. The junior also made a pair of diving stops at second base to halt any more runs from scoring. Dylan Bahrke, Schulting, DeJongh, and Landon accounted for the other four.
The Eagles will take a break in their NACC schedule to take on nonconference opponent Maranatha Baptist Thursday afternoon. The doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Brandt Quirk Park in Watertown.
