Box Score 2 VERONA, Wis. – After giving up a combined nine runs in the first two innings today, a sweep did not look possible for the Edgewood College softball team but the Eagles were determined to get a win. Edgewood College battled back from deficits in both games to sweep Concordia University Chicago 9-7 and 5-4 Saturday afternoon at Ceniti Park.
The Cougars could not have asked for a better start as they unleashed for seven runs on seven hits in the second inning. Alicia Salata ripped a two-run home run while Meghan Johnson followed with a grand slam six batters later. The early deficit was no worry for Edgewood College (12-13, 4-8 NACC) as they chipped away at Concordia Chicago's lead. Tiffani Pierce put the Eagles on the board with an RBI single in the second before Edgewood College tallied six runs in the third. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Alyssa Schulting who drilled a grand slam over the left center wall, her second home run of the year. The Eagles were not done, however, as Pierce tied the game with a double to left field.
An inning later, Jackie Diesch gave the Eagles an 8-7 lead as she laced a 2-0 pitch to left field to plate Carlene DeCoster. DeCoster was then on the giving end in the fifth as she reached on an infield single to third base to score Kylie Clark. Karlie Klossner pitched strong in relief, going 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out three and sealing the 9-7 win.
The Cougars (6-16, 3-9 NACC) jumped ahead in the first inning of game two as they tagged Diesch for two runs right off the bat. Edgewood College was held to just two hits until the fifth. Pierce began the rally with a single and McLean pushed her over with a sacrifice bunt. Alexis Unser, Clark, and DeCoster all followed with singles which tied the game at 2-2. Diesch then came up with a huge double to left center which scored a pair and put the Eagles up 4-2.
Concordia Chicago responded with two unearned runs in the sixth, but the Eagles threatened to break the 4-4 tie in the sixth. Edgewood College got three hits and loaded the bases, but could not score. Down to their final chance, Schulting stroked a one-out double to right field. Katie Landon sent the Eagles to their second straight win as she singled through the left side to plate pinch-runner Alyssa Damon in walk-off fashion. DeJongh earned the win in three innings of relief. The sophomore allowed just two hits and zero earned runs in the victory.
Clark and DeCoster each went an impressive 5-for-7 on the day in their 1-2 lineup positions while scoring three runs apiece. Pierce and Schulting each tallied three hits while Schulting brought in four with her home run. Diesch, Unser, and Landon all had a pair of hits on the day.
The Eagles will look for their third straight win this Tuesday as they head to Aurora, Illinois for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader. Live video and stats will be provided.
