Box Score 2 VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team did not originally have plans to play this evening, but potential rain on Sunday brought Dominican University to Verona two days early. The unexpected early doubleheader was not kind to the Eagles as they fell 4-2, and 10-0 to the Stars.
Recently, the first game of Edgewood College's doubleheaders has been a pitcher's duel and tonight was no different. Rachel DeJongh and the Stars' Dominique Schneider cruised through the first five innings, allowing just one hit per team. Dominican then found a way to get to the sophomore in the sixth as the leadoff batter reached with a single. After a flyout, the next batter walked which was followed by a single to load the bases. Kaitlin Barajas was then hit by a pitch to plate the game's first run and Dominican added two more on a single up the middle. The Stars' Catherine Conte singled to put Dominican up 4-0, but was thrown out at second to end the rally.
DeJongh drew a walk to start Edgewood College's half of the sixth and pinch runner Jamie Spangler scored on Carlene DeCoster's bunt single and Dominican throwing error. Jackie Diesch then singled and scored on Alyssa Schulting's groundout for the Eagles' second run but that was all Edgewood College could muster in the inning. Taylor McLean singled in the seventh, but the Eagles could not plate any more runs and fell 4-2.
The nightcap was a whole different story as the Dominican bats came out hot right away in the first. The Stars plated one run on three hits and three more on a trio of hits in the second. Dominican continued to pour it on with a solo run in the third and three more in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. Meanwhile, Edgewood College managed just two hits on the first four innings. After the Stars increased their lead to 10-0 after five and a half, the Eagles showed some life. Kylie Clark began the inning with a single and DeCoster advanced her after beating out an infield single herself. Clark advanced to third on a throwing error to put runners on the corners, but Edgewood College was held scoreless as Dominican's Sara Slouber ended the shortened game with a strikeout.
DeCoster picked up three hits on the day while Landon continued to provide offense with two hits in four at-bats today. Landon is 8-for-17 (.471) in the last six games while scoring five runs. Jackie Diesch also added a pair of hits for the Eagles.
Edgewood College will try to end their five game skid with a doubleheader tomorrow at Ceniti Park. The Eagles will face Concordia University Chicago at noon.
