Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the first time since 2008, the Edgewood College softball team has won four straight non-conference games. The Eagles took down MCLA 4-2 in game one before sneaking past Nazareth College 3-2 in extra innings to improve their overall record to 6-4.
Rachel DeJongh has proved yet again why she is the staff ace in two games today. DeJongh tossed a no-hitter through four games against MCLA before Katelyn Welsh came in on relief. After sitting down in order in the first and second, Edgewood College broke through in the third. DeJongh singled in Alexis Unser and Jackie Diesch brought home Tiffani Pierce to put the Eagles up 2-0. Katie Landon added to the lead with a one-out single to left center, bringing in two.
MCLA finally snuck past a run after a single, a walk, and an error loaded the bases. Despite the advantageous situation, the Trailblazers scored just one in the fifth. MCLA added one more in the sixth but Karlie Klossner shut down the opposition in the final frame to preserve the 4-2 win.
Game two had nearly the same start, but a far better finish as Edgewood College and Nazareth College worked into extra innings. DeJongh was brilliant again in the circle, tossing five straight hitless innings before the Golden Flyers started the sixth with two singles. In the seventh, Nazareth collected a pair of singles and the next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. DeJongh plunked the next batter which allowed a run to score, but the sophomore got the next two out to end the threat. Needing a run to tie or two to win, Diesch began the seventh with a single. After Alyssa Schulting reached on an error, Unser singled to fill the bases. With the game on the line, Pierce ripped a single to left center to tie it at one and send the game to extra innings.
The Golden Flyers again scored a run when they needed as an error allowed Morgan Ross to score, who was placed at second to start the inning due to the international tie breaker rule. Trailing 2-1, the Eagles again found themselves in a do or die situation. Kylie Clark was placed on second to start the inning and DeJongh singled up the middle to plate Clark. The Eagles were not done, however as Carlene DeCoster bunted over DeJongh. Diesch then singled to move over DeJongh and Schulting came through with a clutch game-winning hit as she poked the first pitch she saw the center field, giving Edgewood College a 3-2 victory.
DeJongh earned both wins on the rubber, pitching a total of 12 innings on the day allowing just one earned run, four hits, and striking out five. Over a four game stretch, DeJongh went 17.1 innings without allowing an earned run. Diesch collected three hits at the plate while DeCoster, DeJongh, and Unser each had two. Landon brought in a pair for the Eagles.
Edgewood College will wrap up their spring trip tomorrow with a full three game day. The Eagles play Bridgewater State and 9:00 am, Ohio Wesleyan at 11:00 am, and remake the game against Kenyon College at 3:00 pm. Live stats will be available on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
