Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Edgewood College softball team seemed to be clicking on all cylinders today, pounding out 23 hits in two games for a batting combined average of .451. The Eagles tallied two wins, a 6-4 contest over Northland College and an 8-0 shutout against Eastern Nazarene College.
Game one of the day was a back-and-forth battle after Edgewood College (4-4) drew first blood in the first inning. Northland tied the game in the bottom of the inning and grabbed their first lead with two hits and a run in the second. In the fourth, the Eagles knotted the score at 2-2 when the Lumberjill's catcher tried to pickoff Tiffani Pierce from first but the ball sailed to the right field fence. Pierce flashed some speed and registered Edgewood College's second run. Carlene DeCoster then singled in Kylie Clark to pull the Eagles up by one but Northland responded with two in the fifth. After Jackie Diesch drew a walk to start the sixth, Alyssa Schulting singled her to third. Pierce pinch ran for Schulting and stole second to put runners in scoring position. Alexis Unser then hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Diesch and Dylan Bahrke followed with a suicide squeeze to bring in Pierce and go ahead a run. Edgewood College added an insurance run in the seventh and DeJongh shut down Northland in the bottom half to seal the 6-4 victory.
Karlie Klossner pitched a solid 4.2 innings giving up just two earned runs while striking out three and walking none. DeJongh picked up the win in relief, striking out two in 2.1 innings.
After Eastern Nazarene quieted the Eagles' bats in the first two innings, Edgewood College broke it open in the third. Diesch broke the seal with a double to score DeJongh and later scored on Taylor McLean's single. The Eagles tacked on three more in the fourth thanks to four hits including a two-run single from Schulting. After a lineout in the seventh, Pierce ripped a triple to the left center gap and Clark drew a walk then stole to put runners at second and third. DeJongh singled in both to put Edgewood College up 7-0. DeCoster singled up the middle moving Klossner, who pinch ran for DeJongh, to third and Diesch singled to make it 8-0 and end the game in five innings.
On the mound, DeJongh was lights out, surrendering just two hits in five innings while striking out five. The sophomore used just 56 pitches against the Lions.
Clark got off to a rock start in the beginning of the season but is finding her ground at the plate. The freshman went 4-for-5 today with three runs scored. Diesch also picked up four hits while McLean went 3-for-4 with her first three hits of the season. Schulting and DeJongh also tallied three hits and brought in two runs each.
The Eagles will try to add to their two game winning streak tomorrow with two more contests. Edgewood College plays MCLA at 1:00 pm before taking on Nazareth College at 3:00 pm. Live stats will be available for both games.
