Eagles fall to Cardinals, Beavers at Lee County

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – After both games were rained out yesterday, the Edgewood College softball team was eager to see get back on the field. The Eagles kicked the day off early with two games before noon, but fell in both. Edgewood College dropped a 3-2 contest to St. John Fisher in a pitcher's duel before stumbling 8-1 against Bluffton University.

Sophomore Rachel DeJongh cruised through the Cardinals in the first four innings, using just 27 pitches to sit down 13 batters. The Eagles took charge in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs with two outs. DeJongh,, Alexis Unser, and Jackie Diesch knocked three straight singles to load the bases. Alyssa Schulting followed with a sharp single down the left field line to score two and Edgewood College jumped ahead 2-0. After St. John's Genevieve Paeglow drew a walk, the next batter reached on an error. The Cardinals followed with a single to score one before DeJongh struck out two in a row. St. John's then pushed a two-out double to left field bringing in two runs for a 3-2 lead.

After allowing a leadoff single in the sixth, DeJongh sat down the Cardinals to keep the deficit at one. The Eagles had two innings to retake the lead, but could not pick up a hit down the stretch and lost a tough 3-2 contest.

In game two, Bluffton University came out swinging, scoring an early run after a leadoff single. The Eagles responded with three hits in the bottom half of the inning, but could not push a run across. In the second, the Beavers tacked on three more runs on three hits and an Edgewood College error to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles finally erased the zero on the scoreboard in the third as Diesch hit a deep double to left field, scoring DeJongh.

The Beavers matched that with another in the top of the fourth and the Eagles could not quite climb out of the hole. Edgewood College tacked on just two more hits the rest of the game, leaving four runners on base.

DeJongh ripped four hits in seven at bats (.571) in the two games today and pitched a total of 8.1 innings giving up just two earned runs. Unser also picked up four hits while Carlene DeCoster (3) and Diesch (2) also had multi-hit days.

Edgewood College will be back to Lee County Sports Complex tomorrow for two more games. The Eagles will face Northland College at 9:00 am before taking on Eastern Nazarene at 11:00 am. Live stats will be available on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
