Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. – By the time some were just wiping sleep out of their eyes, the Edgewood College softball teams was already plating their final run. The Eagles picked up a pair of victories before 10 a.m. on the second day of the Finlandia University Dome Tournament to finish 2-2 on the weekend. Edgewood College downed Mount Mary University 11-0 before topping Carroll University 4-3 in the Superior Dome on Sunday morning.
After combining for just three runs in two games on Saturday, the Eagles erupted for 11 runs on 10 hits in game one against Finlandia. Edgewood College scored one in the first on a sacrifice fly before tallying eight runs in the second, all with two outs. Jamie Spangler started the rally with a single and a stolen base followed by a Kylie Clark walk. Unser and Carlene DeCoster ripped back-to-back singles, plating two before Jackie Diesch pounded an RBI double. Rachel DeJongh singled next and Dylan Bahrke bombed a three-run home run to complete the inning's scoring.
Diesch was brilliant in the circle, allowing three hits and striking out three more in three innings. Freshman Katelyn Welsh saw her first action in the circle and pitched two hitless innings, striking out three. Already leading 9-0, Edgewood College picked up a run in both the third and fourth innings to end the game due in five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Rachel DeJongh toed the rubber in game two against Carroll University and breezed through three innings before the Pioneers snuck a run across in the fourth. Edgewood College broke through in the sixth after Diesch ripped a one-out double. Spangler stole second for DeJongh who reached on a Carroll error and Bahrke brought in both runs with a single. After Katie Landon reached on another Pioneer error, Bahrke crossed on a passed ball to take a 3-1 lead.
Three consecutive singles for Carroll gave the Pioneers a big opportunity in the sixth, but Tiffani Pierce gunned down a runner at home for the second out to preserve the two-run lead. Carroll scored on an Eagles' error and again on a double to tie the game, but DeJongh got a groundout and strikeout to end the rally.
Clark led off the decisive seventh and reached on a Pioneers error. The freshman then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. DeCoster came through in the clutch a she singled to bring in Clark and pull the Eagles ahead 4-3. DeJongh then sat down Carroll in order in the seventh to pull out the one-run victory for Edgewood College.
Diesch and DeCoster collected three hits on the day while Bahrke went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run. DeJongh and Unser also picked up a pair of hits. Diesch earned the win in game one while DeJongh threw her second complete game this season, getting the victory with four strikeouts in seven innings.
