Box Score 3 FORT MYERS, Wis. – The team with the most momentum often has an advantage going into a game and that's where Edgewood College stood on Monday. Riding a four-game winning streak, the Eagles knocked off Bridgewater State 4-2 and Ohio Wesleyan 3-1 before dropping their final Florida trip contest 8-5 to Kenyon College.
In game one, Bridgewater State jumped on the Eagles early, scoring two runs in the first inning, but then Rachel DeJongh settled into the circle. The sophomore allowed just three hits and no more runs the rest of the contest, pitching the complete game win. Edgewood College (8-5) left two runners on base in both the first and second innings before taking a lead on three hits and a pair of Bears' errors. Alexis Unser brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Dylan Bahrke singled home Kylie Clark to tie the game. Taylor McLean and Barhke then crossed after a Bridgewater State error to put the Eagles up 4-2. DeJongh took care of business the rest of the way and Edgewood College took the win.
Karlie Klossner toed the rubber in game two and pitched an absolute gem. The Monticello native evened her record as she tossed seven innings without allowing an earned run. Klossner struck out two and scattered eight hits in the outing. The Battling Bishops run came in the second, but the Eagles responded quickly with two in the third. DeJongh hit a deep double to right center which plated Clark and Schulting brought in DeJongh just two batters later. Edgewood College an insurance run in the fifth as Schulting recorded her second RBI of the game, poking a single to left center which scored Tiffani Pierce. Klossner finished the game in style as both of her strikeouts came in the final inning.
Playing two games in 80 degree weather is tough, but three is even more difficult. The Eagles extended their streak to six games with the wins in the morning, but ran into a hot Kenyon College team in the afternoon. Edgewood College jumped on the Ladies early, tallying four runs on three hits in the first. Kenyon responded with one in the second which was matched by an Eagles' run in the bottom of the inning, but then the Ladies began to heat up. Kenyon scored a pair in the fourth to pull within one and then registered three more in the fifth to capture the lead. After tacking on one more to pull ahead 8-5, Edgewood College had two more chances for a comeback. The Eagles got a runner on base in both innings, but could not plate them and fell by three.
Schulting plated four runs today with five hits in 10 at bats. Both Jackie Diesch and Carlene DeCoster tacked on three hits while Clark had a pair. Klossner went 1-1 in the circle allowing just one earned run in 9.1 innings (0.75 ERA). DeJongh earned one complete game win in two starts and struck out five in a total of 10.2 innings.
After playing nine games in four days, the Eagles will have 19 days off before their next scheduled game. Edgewood College is scheduled to play Benedictine University in the NACC opener on March 29 in Lisle, Illinois.
