Eagles edge Spartans in overtime thriller

Brooke McBain
Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball experienced a heart-breaking loss on Wednesday and was determined to not let that happen again. Brooke McBain rattled in a game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in regulation and the Eagles used a 6-0 run to finish the game and edge Aurora University 66-65 in overtime.

Edgewood College led a majority of the second half before Aurora rallied back to tie the game with 5:11 left on the clock. From that point, the duel featured four ties and three lead changes. Three free throws put the Spartans up 59-56, but with time running out on the shot clock, McBain threw up an off-balance three-pointer which sent the game into overtime at 59-59.

In the extra period, the Spartans connected on consecutive three-pointers sandwiched around a McBain free throw to go up by five. Mariah Hill responded with back-to-back jumpers just 41 seconds apart to pull Edgewood College (12-11, 12-6 NACC) within one. After forcing an empty Aurora possession, Chelsey Watkins converted the go-ahead layup with 1:17 left on the clock. From that point on, it was all defense as the Eagles stopped two Bethany Dorrington jumpers and came away with the victory.

Edgewood College led for most of the first half as well but the Spartans came back to take the lead for about five minutes. Hill connected for a triple with 34 seconds left in the half to give the Eagles a 24-22 lead at the break. Edgewood College ran out to a nine-point lead with 8:08 left in the game but the Spartans (12-12, 11-8 NACC) would not back down easy and rallied back for the nail-biting finish.

Aurora's Dorrington had an impressive night and single-handedly kept the Spartans in the game with 30 points and 12 rebounds. The sophomore guard hit six three-pointers in nine attempts.

McBain led three in double figures for the Eagles with 16 on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor. Hill chipped in 15 and five assists while Watkins added 13 on an efficient 4-for-6 night to go along with four assists.

Edgewood College moved to a tie for fourth place in the NACC with the victory and with a win in Sunday's game at Benedictine University, the Eagles can clinch a first round bye in the conference tournament. Live video and live stats will be available for the 7:00 pm home game.
