Five Eagles hit double figures in win

Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball certainly needed a win like this one. Having dropped four of their last five games and facing a team they had lost to in November, the Eagles turned up their defense to pull away for a 66-56 victory over Alverno College on Saturday at the Edgedome. The Eagles had five players in double figures for the first time in school history.

After trailing by as many as 11 points in first half, Edgewood College (4-9, 4-4 NACC) rattled off a 10-0 run and entered halftime tied at 31-31. The Eagles gained a huge lift from senior Dareon Henderson who went 4-for-6 from the field and scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half.

Alverno College (8-5, 5-3 NACC) scored the first two baskets of the second half, but Chelsey Watkins sparked the Eagles with a three-pointer to ignite a 10-2 run and put the Eagles in front. Watkins had a huge day for the Eagles with 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for her second career double-double. She also led the team with five assists and four steals.

With nine minutes to play, the Inferno led 48-43 after a jump shot from Kristen Speerschneider, but the Eagles had another answer. Post players Brooke McBain and Courtney Spangler scored a pair of short jumpers and the Eagles went off for an 11-0 run. McBain scored five of her 13 points in that stretch and went 6-for-9 from the field for the game. Spangler had 11 points to go with six rebounds.

Alverno climbed back within three points at 54-51 with 2:47 left to go on a three-point play by Jamie Hoernke, but that's as close as the would get. Another McBain jumper and free throws from Watkins, Rachel Pope and Mariah Hill sealed the deal. Hill was the fifth Eagle to reach double figures, hitting her 10th point on a pair of free throws with three seconds left.

The game was won at the free throw line, where Edgewood College went 21-for-26 (80.8 percent), while Alverno College shot almost the same percentage, but was just 10-for-13 (76.9 percent).

Edgewood College will be back in action on Tuesday for a road game at Dominican University. The Eagles will return home on January 11 to meet Concordia University Chicago.
