Eagles claim victory twice at CSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE, Wis. – After a tense loss to UW-Whitewater on Friday night, the Edgewood College volleyball team knew their focus on the next task would be tested at the Cardinal Stritch University Triangular. No need for Eagle fans to worry, as Edgewood College defeated Lawrence University 3-1 in the opening match and downed the host Wolves 3-2 in an evening thriller.

Against Lawrence University (5-10) the Eagles claimed the first two sets 25-19 and 27-25, before dropping the third set 25-19. Edgewood College righted the ship for a 25-23 win in the fourth set. Jordan Winkler had the final kill of the match and finished with 12 kills and 26 digs. Sarah Schuchhardt totaled 11 kills against three errors and had four blocks to share team-high honors with Katie Wedvick and Kaitlyn Rabel. Rachel Tesch had a career-high 29 digs to lead the Eagles in the back row. Lindsey Swansby had 34 assists from her setter position. The Eagles hit only .125, but had nine blocks in the match.

The finale against Cardinal Stritch (7-6) featured 24 tie scores and 11 lead changes over five sets. The Wolves jumped ahead with a 25-19 win in the opener, but the Eagles bounced back with 25-18 and 25-20 wins in the next two sets. Cardinal Stritch scored a big 25-13 win in set four, but the Eagles regrouped for a 15-11 win in the final set.

The fifth set was tied 9-9 when two aces from Tesch wrapped around a pair of kills by Jessica Martin put the Eagles ahead 13-9. Schuchhardt scored the 14th point on her 10th kill and Martin finished the match, also on her 10th kill. Winkler eclipsed her career-high, which she had set one match earlier, by collecting 30 digs. Rachel Thomsen had 22 digs and nine assists. The Eagles posted eight blocks led by Schuchhardt who had a hand in five of them. Swansby had 34 assists.

Edgewood College will rest up the entire week before playing in the inaugural NACC-IIAC Challenge at the Just A Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells next Friday and Saturday. The Eagles will play the top four schools from the IIAC based on last season's final standings.
