Eagles comeback falls short vs. Warhawks

Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team never fails to give the fans their money's worth. For the third time in three matches, the Eagles played extra points in a set. This time, however, Edgewood College was on the losing end as the Eagles fell 3-1 to nineteenth-ranked UW-Whitewater despite a valiant comeback effort.

Edgewood College (11-3) could not have asked for a better start, as the Eagles jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first. UW-Whitewater rallied back and took their first lead at 18-17, but the two teams battled back and forth before the Eagles found themselves facing a UW-Whitewater set point at 24-21. Two Warhawk errors and a Jordan Winkler kill tied it up and extra points were a definite. Edgewood College and Whitewater traded points, but the Warhakws' Ariel Feiertag sent the nineteenth team in the country to a first set win.

After a 25-15 Warhawk victory in set number two, Edgewood College's hopes were looking dim. The Eagles bounced back, however to take the third after an impressive comeback. Down 23-20, Katie Wedvick and Jessica Martin paired up for some kills and took a 24-23 lead. Two Edgewood College errors gave the Warhawks a 25-24 lead, but the Eagles stormed back with kills by Martin and Sarah Schuchhardt for a 27-25 victory.

After pulling within a game in the match, the crowd was on its feet, hoping Edgewood College could continue the comeback. At one point, the Eagles held a 13-8 lead in the fourth set, but UW-Whitewater did not give and rallied back to grab a 23-22 lead. Wedvick tied the set at 23-23, but the match ended as Feiertag ripped two more kills.

Lindsey Swansby was a dig away from a triple double, as she had a team-lead 26 assists, 10 kills, and nine digs. Martin and Wedvick held team honors with 11 kills apiece. Rachel Tesch led the back row with 15 digs and Rachel Thomsen dished out a season-high 17 assists.

Edgewood College will have a pair of non-conference matches this Saturday at Cardinal Stritch, facing the host school and Lawrence University. Live stats will be available with links on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
