Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Despite an NCAA Tournament berth and a conference title in the past two seasons, the Edgewood College volleyball team has always felt a little ignored on the national scene. It's going to be hard to ignore the Eagles any longer. Edgewood College earned a statement victory on Saturday stunning fifth-ranked Christopher Newport University 3-1 in the final match of their own Captains Classic.

Edgewood College (3-1) put on a dominating performance against the Christopher Newport (3-1) who advanced all the way to the NCAA Division III national semifinals a year ago. The Eagles made themselves at home winning 25-16, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20 in The Freeman Center, a venue which had seen the Captains win 29 consecutive home matches dating back to 2011.

"This team played with such focus, such determination and such confidence," said head coach Paul Schlomer, who became the Eagles all-time winningest coach on Friday in the Eagles' season opener. "It was really great to see all of the contributions from the whole team all weekend."

Tournament Most Valuable Player Lindsey Swansby saved her best for last handing out 34 assists while converting six kills with no attack errors in the match. Freshman Elizabeth Evans and senior Jessica Martin shared team-high honors with nine kills each. Jordan Winkler had 14 digs, while Rachel Thomsen scored four service aces.

Coach Schlomer wanted to make sure the local fan base sat up and took notice as well saying, "This is a great win, but it is also just the beginning. We are bringing a fun team back to Madison." Also named to the All-Tournament team were Samantha Himmelspach and Katie Wedvick. The Eagles shared the tournament title with Christopher Newport and Berry College who each had 3-1 records.

In the first match of the day, the Eagles suffered a 25-17, 14-25, 25-15, 28-26 setback at the hand of Berry College. Martin had a big match scoring 15 kills and a .235 attack percentage. Winkler had 11 kills while Evans added in 10 kills. Himmelspach recorded a whopping 26 digs in the back row.

Edgewood College will fly home to Wisconsin and be back in action on Wednesday with a triangular at UW-Oshkosh. Edgewood College will meet the host Titans at 3:30 p.m. followed by the University of Dubuque at 5:30 p.m.
