RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College softball team needed a pair of wins and some help around the league to have a chance to clinch the last spot in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament, but did not get either on Saturday. The Eagles were swept by Concordia University Chicago 0-2, 1-18 and Wisconsin Lutheran College split with Concordia University Wisconsin to end Edgewood College's hopes at the postseason.
The Eagles actually outhit Concordia Chicago in game one, but left nine batters on base in the shutout loss. Rachel DeJongh pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts, but it was not enough as she yielded two runs and could not get the support from the Eagles' offense.
The Cougars earned their first run in the first inning after a leadoff triple and tacked on one more in the third behind three hits. Edgewood College's best chance came in the sixth when Tiffani Pierce led off with a single. After a popout, Katie Landon was hit by a pitch to reach first. Both batters advanced to scoring position after tagging up on Taylor Buchanan's fly to right, but the Eagles could not bring in a run.
After only getting six hits in game one, Concordia Chicago found their stride in the afternoon. The Cougars roughed up Charlie Leikness for five hits and five runs in the first before the second inning began to get messy. Edgewood College committed three errors and Concordia Chicago (19-20, 15-9 NAC) pounded out seven hits for 11 runs before the inning finally ended with a pop up to second base.
The Eagles got one back in the third after Pierce singled in Lindsey Elsing, but Edgewood College left the bases loaded without putting a dent in their deficit. The Cougars added insult to injury with three hits and two runs in the fourth and shortened the game to five innings after forcing three quick Edgewood College outs in the fifth.
Pierce ended her season with a strong finish, going 3-for-3 in game one and collecting one of Edgewood College's two hits in the second. Carlene DeCoster also had a hit in each contest while Elsing went 2-for-3 in game one.
Edgewood College ends their season 12-28 overall with a 10-14 mark in the NAC. The Eagles' 10 conference wins are the most since 2010 when Edgewood College went 12-12. The Eagles graduate one senior in Jessica Spitzer who has been a cornerstone her entire career.
