FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team matched a season-high with 11 runs batted in in game two of a doubleheader against Marian University, but mental mistakes and the inability to drive in runs in the first contest cost the Eagles a sweep. After dropping the opener 5-2 to the Sabres, Edgewood College's offense shined behind freshmen Jackie Diesch and Rachel DeJongh to win a shortened game two 13-5.

The Eagles left runners on base in all but one inning which led to Edgewood College only scoring a pair of runs. DeJongh, who was coming off two of her best outings of the season, struggled to find the strike zone while she handed out four walks and tossed 89 pitches in 2 2/3 innings pitched.

The Sabres' Emily Gorges hurt the Eagles both in the circle and at the plate. Gorges pitched a complete game, striking out six Edgewood College batters, while belting a solo home run in the fourth. Prior to the home run, the Sabres scored a pair in the first and third innings to take game one 5-2.

The nightcap was a completely different story as the Eagles pounded out hits left and right off of Gorges, who only lasted two innings. In the first, the Eagles batted around the order, piling up seven runs of seven hits. Six different Edgewood College batters ripped a base hit in the first.

The runs did not stop there as Edgewood College added two more in three consecutive innings. Diesch led off the second with a home run and Tiffani Pierce added a single to plate Alyssa Schulting. Schulting then brought in a pair in the third after lining the first pitch she saw into left center.

Taylor Buchanan and Dylan Bahrke drew RBI walks an inning later and suddenly, Edgewood College held a 13-0 lead. Charlie Leikness dominated Marian's lineup early, sitting down the first 10 batters she saw before the Sabres' Brie Hechimovich broke up the no-hitter with a double.

Holding a 13-1 lead heading into Marian's half of the fifth, the Sabres' began to mount a rally. Leikness forced two quick groundouts but four consecutive hits plated four runs for Marian. The Sabres needed one more to extend the game, but Leikness got Gabby D'Oronzo to pop out to end the game in five innings 13-5.

DeJongh and Diesch led the offensive charge, combining for nine hits (9-for13). Both had at least two hits in each game. Bahrke, Diesch, Pierce, Schulting, and Jessica Spitzer all knocked in a pair of runs.

Another away doubleheader is scheduled for the Eagles tomorrow beginning at 3:00 p.m. Edgewood College will battle Concordia Wisconsin in a doubleheader at Mequon. Live stats will be provided for the doubleheader with links on Edgewood College Eagles.com.
