VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team got two superb pitching performances from
Rachel DeJongh and six hits from
Carlene DeCoster, but had to settle for a split against Wisconsin Lutheran College. DeJongh's complete game two-hitter propelled the Eagles to a 5-1 win in game one, but a rough first inning allowed the Warriors to take game two 4-3.
Edgewood College jumped ahead right out of the gate as DeCoster led off with a single. After Alyssa Schulting reached on a fielder's choice, Jessica Spitzer singled to load the bases. The Warriors forced DeCoster out at home, but DeJongh reached on a fielder's choice as all runners were safe. Katie Landon then ripped a sacrifice fly to deep center, plating Spitzer and the Eagles took a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Dylan Bahrke began another rally with a single through the right side. After Paityn Albers moved Bahrke over with a sacrifice bunt, Tiffani Pierce singled to put runners at the corners. DeCoster then singled to bring in a run and stole second on the next pitch. A wild pitch allowed Pierce to cross and DeCoster followed, scoring after an error by the shortstop.
DeJongh was near perfect in the circle as she retired 16 of the first 18 batters she faced, walking the difference. Wisconsin Lutheran's Mindy Schalinske finally broke up the no-hitter as she poked a single over Landon's head into left field. The Warriors' Dayan Gacgacao followed that with another hit and Wisconsin Lutheran finally got on the board after a groundout brought in Schalinkse. Despite the unearned run, Edgewood College took the game 5-1.
Charlie Leikness toed the rubber in game two and ran into some trouble in the first inning as she walked the first two batters. After getting the Warriors' Jinny Curtis to pop up, Leikness walked another batter to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed all runners to advance a base which forced head coach to put DeJongh back in for her second game of the day. The Madison native finally got out of the first inning, but not before Wisconsin Lutheran tallied a 3-0 lead.
Edgewood College began to chip away in the first as a throwing error allowed Schulting to score, who double earlier in the inning. In the second, two more Eagles scored as Schulting and Spitzer drew walks with the bases loaded and Edgewood College cut their deficit to 4-3. DeJongh began to work her magic on the mound again, only allowing three hits in the remaining five innings but the Eagles could not plate the tying run and fell 4-3.
On the day, DeJongh pitched 13.2 innings while allowing only six hits. The freshman also struck out eight while holding opposing hitters to a .128 batting average. DeCoster put together two three-hit performances while Bahrke was 4-for-6 on the day.
The Eagles will continue their conference scheduled in Fond du Lac on Wednesday against Marian University. Live stats will be provided for the 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
