VERONA, Wis. – Another day hosting one of the top teams in the Northern Athletics Conference did not fare well for the Edgewood College softball team. The Eagles only combined for 12 hits in two games as Edgewood College fell to Aurora University 10-2, 4-2 on Senior Day.
After being held under seven hits in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, Edgewood College got off on the right foot against Aurora, stroking two hits in the first inning. Alyssa Schulting and Jessica Spitzer ripped back-to-back singles as the Eagles threatened to score, but the Spartans' Natalie Zanella escaped the jam after a groundout and strikeout. Trailing 2-0, Carlene DeCoster led off the third and took a 1-2 pitch to left field for the first home run of her career.
The home run brought the Eagles within one, but Aurora exploded for five runs on four hits to open the Spartans lead up to 7-1. Spitzer singled in Pierce in the fifth, but Edgewood College could not add another run in the inning. An inning later, the Eagles threatened to close the gap again, but with two on and nobody out, Zanella got Dylan Bahrke to line out into a double play. Aurora (25-3, 17-1 NAC) added two more in the seventh and Edgewood College failed to retaliate as the Eagles fell 10-2 in the noon contest.
Charlie Leikness earned the nod for game two and held the conference's top offensive team to only seven hits. After Aurora picked up a run in the first inning and two more in the third, Edgewood College (8-21, 6-7 NAC) again was playing from behind. In the third, Tiffani Pierce lined a 1-1 pitch to the gap for a double. Aurora's Vanessa Hartzell then forced DeCoster to ground out, but Schulting brought the Eagles within one as she hit a towering two-run bomb to right center. Spitzer followed with a single, but the rally was ended after a line out to shortstop.
Leikness took care of business on the mound the next two innings, sitting down six straight Spartans before Aurora led off the sixth with a single. Unfazed by the base-hit, the senior then forced a groundout and two pop outs to end the inning. Despite the strong start on the mound, Edgewood College could not provide any more help at the plate as the Eagles went the final four innings without a hit. The Spartans added one more run in the top of the seventh on a pair of hits and took the game 4-2.
Spitzer led the charge on senior day, picking up three hits. Schulting added two including the second home run of her career. Pierce went 2-for-5 at the plate in the twin bill.
Edgewood College will not be able to relax as they host their third doubleheader in as many days tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The Eagles will face Wisconsin Lutheran College at Ceniti Park with live coverage links available on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
