Spartans rally from behind to top Eagles

Mariah Hill
Box Score MADISON, Wis. -  Aurora University only led for four seconds on Saturday night, but it was the only four seconds that mattered. The Spartans' Shay Jenkins hit a jumper in the lane with 4.3 seconds to play to give Aurora its only lead of the game and lift her team over Edgewood College 67-65 in a NACC women's basketball game at the Edgedome. The Eagles led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but couldn't hold the surging Spartans.

Edgewood College (2-7, 2-3 NACC) led 55-40 with 13:23 to play, but suffered through a cold shooting streak which allowed the Spartans to get back into the game. Aurora's Bethany Dorrington was the biggest reason for a comeback, as she made three three-pointers in a span of four possessions on her way to a 31-point night.

Aurora University (3-6, 2-3 NACC) tied the game at 63-63 on a steal and a layup by Jenkins, but the Eagles' Rachel Pope answered, by stripping Anna Roszkowski of the ball and scoring with 1:21 left to go. On the next possession, Dorrington sunk two free throws to tie the game once again at 65-65. Edgewood College put the ball in the hands of Mariah Hill, who drove all the way around the perimeter, but missed a contested shot on the run from the short left baseline with 34 seconds left. Aurora drained the clock and ran Jenkins off a screen for the game-winning basket on the next possession.

The struggle of the second half overshadowed what may have been one of the Eagles' finest first halves of the season. The Eagles scored 40 points and shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) including four three-pointers. Edgewood College's largest lead of the first half was 11 points and they led 40-34 at the break.

Edgewood College had four players in double figures, led by Hill with 17 points. Hill made six of her first seven shots and also had a team-high seven assists. Courtney Spangler went 5-for-7 from the field and finished with 12 points. Pope and Brooke McBain each scored 11 points, with McBain pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.

After Dorrington's huge night, Aurora got 18 points from Jenkins as well as three steals. The Spartans shot only 33.3 percent in the second half, but drilled six three-pointers in order to get back into the game.

Edgewood College will be off for final exams next week, but returns to conference play on Saturday, December 21 at Marian University for their final game before Christmas.
