MILWAUKEE, Wis. – For 45 minutes, the Edgewood College women's soccer team peppered shots at the Wisconsin Lutheran College net, but couldn't score. When the Eagles finally broke through, however, the flood gates opened up. Edgewood College scored four second half goals to defeat the Warriors 4-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference opener for both teams.
Edgewood College (2-1, 1-0 NAC) fired 15 shots in the first half, but never solved the Warriors' goalkeeper Kate Gucinski or her defense. Gucinski made five first half saves and Wisconsin Lutheran (1-2-1, 0-1 NAC) was holding up against the powerful Eagles' offense.
The tide turned quickly in the second half. Emily Berns finally broke the ice in the 49th minute of the game, scoring her first goal of the season. Just 47 seconds later, senior Elaine Gerry put the Eagles ahead 2-0 scoring her fourth goal of the season.
Wisconsin Lutheran tried to mount a counter attack, but managed just one shot on goal which was saved by Kristi Frisch in the 66th minute. The Eagles tallied a pair of insurance goals in the final 10 minutes. The first was a header by Kristina Santaga off a pass from Gerry in the 81st minute. The last was Gerry's second goal of the night and the 80th of her career, which came in the final minute of play.
Edgewood College held a commanding 27-2 lead in shots for the game. Frisch improved to 2-0 on the season in goal by making one save, while her counterpart, Gucinski, made eight saves in a losing effort.
Edgewood College will be in action against a pair of Midwest Conference opponents at Breese Stevens Field twice this weekend. The Eagles will pay Ripon College on Friday night and face Beloit College on Sunday afternoon. Both games can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
