WINONA, Minn. - No one expected to go deep into the season before seniors Elaine Gerry and Kristina Santaga made their presence known. In fact, it only took about 15 minutes. Santaga scored twice and assisted on the goal which made Gerry the Northern Athletics Conference's career points record in Edgewood College 3-0 victory over St. Mary's University in the women's soccer opener for both teams.

There were few great scoring opportunities in the first half as each team was credited with just one shot, but Edgewood College (1-0) made theirs count. Santaga, a senior from Green Bay, opened the scoring off an assist from Gerry just over 15 minutes into the game.

After halftime, Santaga connected for her second goal, scoring unassisted in the 48th minute of play. Three minutes later, Gerry, a senior from Prairie du Sac, took a pass from Santaga and scored her 76th career goal. The goal along with her earlier assist, gave Gerry 168 career points, breaking MSOE's Jessica Axt's career record of 167 points. The 76 goals also ties Axt for the conference record with virtually an entire season still to play.

Lost in the goals and records was strong play by the Eagles defense anchored by senior goalkeeper Kristi Frisch. Frisch made two saves and the defense held St. Mary's (0-1) to just three shots on goal. Tori Fortney relieved Frisch in the 75th minute and made one save.

Edgewood College returns to Madison for their home opener on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles will host St. Norbert College in a 12:00 p.m. start at Breese Stevens Field. EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com will have live video and live statistics links available.
