VERONA, Wis. – After getting rained out on Wednesday, the Edgewood College softball team took on Marian University in a late night doubleheader at Ceniti Park in Verona. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in game one, but the Sabre offense responded to take the game 11-4. The nightcap was much lower scoring as Marian took the pitcher's duel 2-0.

The Eagles worked around an error in the top of the first inning of game one before Emily Monson led off the bottom of the first with a single. Following an out, Monson stole second and scored on a Jessica Spitzer double, putting the Eagles up 1-0. Katie Landon drove in Spitzer with a single to left field before coming in to score on a Jessica Diaz double to put Edgewood College up 3-0 after the first inning.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Sabres answered with three runs in the top of the second. Ariel O'Neill drove in Molly Sipple with a sacrifice fly. Courtney Krueger drove in a run with a single and Liz Schaller tied the game with a run scoring single. Marian took a 4-3 on a Sipple single in the third inning.

The Sabres broke the game open with four runs in the fifth inning, which was highlighted by an Emilie Boehnlein two-run home run to right center field. Monson got one run back with a solo home run in bottom of the fifth inning, but that was as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the way, at 8-4.

Marian (18-16, 13-7 NAC) tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh inning and pitcher Cherise Waltz sat the Eagles down in order to give the Sabres the 11-4 victory.

Monson was the only Eagle with more than one hit as she went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and drove in one run from the leadoff spot.

Game two started just before 10:00 p.m. and both teams left a runner on base in the first inning. O'Neill gave the Sabres the lead in the second inning as she ripped a home run to right center. O'Neill also drove in Marian's other run as she singled through the left side in the fourth inning to score Sipple and give the Sabres a 2-0 lead.

That was all Waltz need as she only allowed four Edgewood College (12-22, 5-15 NAC) hits in the game. The Eagles threatened to comeback in the seventh inning as Alyssa Schulting ripped a one-out single up the middle, but Waltz got a fly out and line out to end the game, giving the Sabres the 2-0 victory.

Alexis Unser, Spitzer, Schulting and Kayla Rackow all record hits for the Eagle offense. Brittany Andrews pitched four innings and gave up one run on three hits while striking out three. Charlie Leikness gave up one run on four hits while striking out four in three innings.

Edgewood College will be in action again on Saturday when they host Rockford College on Senior Day. First pitch from Ceniti Park is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Edgewood College will provide live video and live stats, with the links being found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
