LISLE, Ill. – The Edgewood College softball team started their weekend trip to Chicago with a pair of losses to Northern Athletics Conference leading Benedictine University. Benedictine pitcher Brittany Adcox tossed a perfect game as the Eagles defeated Edgewood College 9-0 in game one. Benedictine took the second game 8-3 after scoring seven runs in the first inning.
Adcox set the tone early as she retired Edgewood College in order in the top of the first inning, and the Benedictine offense built off that momentum. Kelly Mieszala led off the first inning with a triple and scored on a Brittany Wolski single, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead after two batters. Benedictine scored three more runs in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Benedictine got four run scoring singles in the second inning to extend their lead to 8-0 after two innings. Adcox not only tossed a perfect game, but she drove in a run for Benedictine in the third inning, pushing the lead to 9-0. Adcox finished with six strike outs in the perfect game victory.
The last time Edgewood College was no hit was on April 9, 2007 at Lakeland College.
Edgewood College (10-18, 3-11 NAC) broke the hitless streak in the first inning of game two as
Jessica Spitzer and
Chandler Gloudeman recorded back-to-back two out singles. However, Benedictine got out of the inning before the offense erupted in the bottom of the inning. Benedictine (27-8, 19-1 NAC) scored seven runs in the frame. Sara Koch and Mieszala each recorded two-run singles in the inning.
Edgewood College finally got on the scoreboard after
Paityn Albers led off the fifth inning with a double. Two batters later,
Carlene DeCoster drove her in with a double of her own to make the score 7-1. However, Benedictine answered with one run in the bottom of the inning, extending the lead back to seven runs.
In the seventh inning,
Alyssa Schulting reached on an error to start the frame, and after an out, Albers walked to put two runners on.
Katie Landon loaded the bases with a single and
Tiffani Pierce drove in Albers with a sacrifice fly. After DeCoster singled to load the bases again,
Kayla Rackow was hit by a pitch to drive in another run. However, Benedictine induced a pop out to take the game 8-3.
DeCoster was the only Eagle to record two hits as she went 2-for-4 to lead the Eagle offense. Five other Eagles recorded one hit in the loss while DeCoster, Rackow and Pierce all drove in one run.
