VERONA, Wis. – If the Edgewood Collee softball team is going to make a run into the postseason it will have to wait at least another day. Two Concordia University Wisconsin pitchers limited Edgewood College to one run and five hits in sweeping a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader from the Eagles 9-1 and 7-0.
Edgewood College (9-15, 2-8 NAC) got on the board first in game one.
Alexis Unser reached on a fielders' choice and moved up to second on a throwing error. After taking third on a wild pitch, Unser scored on
Jessica Spitzer's RBI single through the right side of the infield to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Concordia University Wisconsin (15-11, 10-2 NAC) evened the game in the third and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run home run by Abbie Goetsch. The Eagles put their leadoff runners aboard in both the fourth and sixth innings, but Falcons' starting pitcher Jamie Schuh escaped the jam each time. Concordia Wisconsin blew the game open with a six run, eight hit seventh inning.
Spitzer accounted for three of the Eagles' four hits in the game, going 3-for-3 with a run batted in.
Emily Monson picked up the Eagles' other base hit. Starting pitcher
Charlie Leikness threw a complete game, allowing nine runs, while striking out one. Schuh struck out nine batters for the Falcons and did not allow an earned run.
In the second game, Falcons pitcher Danielle Burke blanked the Eagles for the first time this season. Burke allowed just one hit, a leadoff double to
Carlene DeCoster in the second inning. Only three Eagles reached base. It was the first time the Eagles had been shutout since a 5-0 loss in the season finale against Concordia University Chicago last year. Edgewood College starting pitcher
Brittany Andrews surrendered six earned runs and struck out three Falcon hitters in a complete game effort.
Edgewood College will play the first of eight consecutive road games on Sunday against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Eagles and Warriors doubleheader will begin at 12:00 p.m.
