VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team tied to rebound after a pair of losses yesterday. However, visiting Dominican University had other ideas as the Stars scored early in both games, en route to the sweep. Dominican took game one 4-1 before breaking the second game open with four home runs to take the contest 10-1.

Corinne Wimmer started game one with an infield single and stole second before being sacrificed to third base. Wimmer then scored on a Sarah Budz groundout to give the Stars (10-10, 3-3 NAC) the early 1-0 advantage.

The lead didn't last long, however as Jessica Spitzer evened the score in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Spitzer crushed a full count pitch over the left field fence that landed over the path and halfway up the hill at Ceniti Park. The blast is the shortstop's seventh of the season and the teams were tied after one inning.

After Dominican took the lead on a wild pitch in the second inning, Katie Landon started the bottom of the second with a single and Chandler Gloudeman followed with a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Following an out, Jessica Diaz loaded the bases with a bunt single and the Eagles (7-11, 0-4 NAC) were in position to tie the game again. However, Star pitcher Jori Cicale induced a pair of popups to escape the jam and keep the score 2-1 in favor of Dominican.

The Stars extended their lead to 4-1 on a two-run single by Andrea Pinarski in the fifth inning, and that was all Cicale needed. After the second inning, she shutdown the Eagle offense, only allowing two hits over the final five innings to earn her sixth win of the season. In seven innings, Cicale struck out nine against only one walk.

Six Eagles recorded a hit to pace the Eagle offense while Charlie Leikness tossed all seven innings and struck out three Stars.

Wimmer started game two just as she did game one, with an infield single. She later came in to score on a Pinarski single to put the Stars up 1-0. However, the Eagles were quick to answer again as Emily Monson led off the bottom of the inning with a single and Diaz followed with a double. Spitzer laced a single to left center that scored Monson and evened the score at one.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the Stars broke the contest open with five runs in the fourth inning. Sarah Slouber led off the inning with her first career home run and Melissa Summaria later ripped a two-run single. Budz capped the five-run inning with a two-run home, making the score 6-1. Slouber started the fifth inning with another home run and after another run scored, Summaria ripped a two-run home to make the score 10-1.

Marissa Grey came in to pitch the seventh for the Stars and she sat down the Eagles in order to give Dominican the sweep.

Monson went 2-for-3 and the Eagles' only run to lead the Edgewood College offense in game two.

The Eagles will be in action again on Tuesday when they host MSOE at Ceniti Park in Verona. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Edgewood College will provide live video and live stats with the links being found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
