TUCSON, Ariz. – The Edgewood College softball team earned their first win in Arizona behind the pitching of Brittany Andrews. The senior tossed a complete game in the Eagles 10-2 victory over Sul Ross State University. In the second game, Denison University used a two-run home run to take a 3-1 victory over the Eagles.

Edgewood College (4-4) didn't waste any time getting on the board against Sul Ross State (2-8) as Emily Monson got hit by a pitch to start the game. After an out, Monson stole second and Jessica Spitzer drove in Monson. Alyssa Schulting put the Eagles up 2-0 when she drew a bases load walk.

Andrews looked sharp early as she sat down the Lobos in order in the first inning. In the second, the Lobos got a hit, but Andrews stranded her on second base.

The Eagles tallied single runs in the third and fourth innings before exploding for three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. Schulting drove a groundball through the right side to score one and Monson ripped a two-run double to left field to break the game open in the fifth inning. The Eagles then scored three unearned runs in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead.

Through six innings, Andrews only gave up two hits, however, the Lobos didn't quit. Sul Ross State scored two runs on a single in the inning, but Andrews got out of the inning to earn her first win of the year. She gave up just those two runs, only one earned in six innings of work and didn't walk anyone.

Spitzer led the Eagle offense, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Kayla Rackow also scored three runs while going 1-for-1 with three walks.

The nightcap against Denison was a pitcher's duel between Charlie Leikness and Rachel Laughlin of Denison. The Big Red scratched out a run to take the lead in the second inning.

Edgewood College threatened in the third and fourth innings, but couldn't push a run across the plate. Denison stretched their lead in the fifth inning as Heather Larson led off the inning with a single and Gretchen Staubach blasted a two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Eagles looked to tie the contest in the sixth inning as Spitzer and Rackow started the inning with back-to-back singles. Carlene DeCoster reached on an infield single and Spitzer scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to get the Eagles on the board. DeCoster stole second to put the tying run in scoring position with no outs. However, Laughlin induced a ground ball for an out before Tiffani Pierce laced a line drive right at the shortstop who doubled off Rackow at third to end the threat.

Laughlin sat the Eagles down in order in the seventh to give Denison the 3-1 win.

Leikness tossed all seven innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned. Five Eagles recorded one hit apiece, accounting for all five Eagle hits.
