TUCSON, Ariz. – The Edgewood College softball team opened their spring break in Arizona against a pair of tough opponents. UW-La Crosse topped the Eagles 6-1 in the first game and Edgewood College hung with 13th ranked Central College for five innings. The Dutch exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning en route to a 14-1 victory.

UW-La Crosse (8-1) started the game with a bang as Katie Fink led off with a double. After a bunt single put runners on the corners, Lindsey Sheehan ripped a sacrifice fly to center field to get UW-La Crosse on the board.

Edgewood College threatened, but stranded two runners in the bottom of the first before the UW-La Crosse offense exploded in the second inning. Fink drove in two runs with a single through the left side, and back-to-back run scoring singles made the score 5-0.

Chandler Gloudeman started the Edgewood College second with a single and Katie Landon followed with a walk. The runners moved over and Gloudeman scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-1 after two innings.

Edgewood College (3-3) couldn't muster any more offense and UW-La Crosse tacked on a run in the fifth inning to make the final score 6-1. Jessica Spitzer paced the Eagle offense, going 2-for-4 from the plate.

In the nightcap against #13 Central (5-1), the Dutch got on the board first with an unearned run in the second inning. The Dutch extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third inning before the Eagle offense tried to get going.

Jessica Diaz tried to spark the Eagle offense as she ripped a triple to leadoff the fourth inning. After an out, Diaz came in to score on a Carlene DeCoster infield single to cut the deficit to just two.

However, Central recorded a pair of runs on a Whitney Sowers two-run home run in the fifth inning before they broke the game open in the sixth inning. The Dutch plated nine runs on eight hits and three Eagle errors, including a home run extend their lead to 14-1, which was the final score. Diaz, DeCoster and Landon accounted for one hit apiece.

Edgewood College will be in action again tomorrow at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Eagles play Sul Ross State University at 3:30 p.m. and Denison University at 6:00 p.m., both Arizona times.
