MADISON, Wis. – For more than 60 minutes it seemed like another typical Edgewood College-Aurora University women's soccer nail-biter. However, the Spartans scored the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute and then tacked on a pair of late, insurance goals for a 4-1 victory over the Eagles in a battle of Northern Athletics Conference title contenders.
Danielle Gillberg gave the Spartans the first lead of the game with a goal 20 minutes into the first half. Just six minutes later, however, Edgewood College forward
Elaine Gerry broke free and scored her 11th goal of the season. Although Aurora University (7-3, 4-0 NAC) held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first half, Eagle goalkeeper
Kristi Frisch made four saves to keep the game knotted at one at halftime.
The Eagles' Mackenize Klingert put another shot on goal in the second half, but it was the Spartans' Christine Kwilosz who broke through. Kwilosz scored from a Britney Schneck corner kick to put Aurora ahead 2-1. The Spartans pinned Edgewood College (5-3-1, 2-1-1 NAC) into their own defensive end and eventually Jordan Joyce scored twice in the 80th and 85th minute to give the Spartans an insurmountable three-goal lead and a 4-1 victory.
The Eagles were outshot 24-5 in the match and Frisch made nine saves to keep the Eagles in the game.
Edgewood College will be home for their next two matches, on Wednesday against Marian University and then again on Saturday when they host Benedictine University.
