WATERTOWN, Wis. – For those fans that like scoring, the Edgewood College women's soccer team and Maranatha Baptist provided that on Tuesday night. The teams combined for five first half goals, four of which went to the Eagles in their 4-1 Northern Athletics Conference victory.
The Eagles (5-2-1, 2-0-1 NAC) put pressure on the Crusaders early and often, recording four shots and two corner kicks in the game's first 13 minutes.
Elaine Gerry finally found the back of the net on the Eagles' fourth shot in the 13th minute. Her team-leading 10th goal of the season was setup by
Kristina Santaga for her third assist of the year. Ten minutes later,
Emily Berns recorded her second goal of the season to put the Eagles up 2-0.
Marantha Baptist (3-4, 0-4 NAC) cut their deficit in half in the 36th minute. Karis Rogers ripped a shot that was saved by
Kristi Frisch, but the ball came back to Rogers who found the back of the net with her second shot for her 10th goal of the season.
Only four minutes later, the Eagles extended the lead back to two goals on an
Erica Svjose goal.
Sophie Rodriguez registered her first assist on the play. Edgewood College would tack on one more goal before the half was over. This time it was Svjose that setup the tally, finding
Hailey Boyle for her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute.
In the first half, Edgewood College recorded 11 shots while holding the Crusaders to just two shots. It was much of the same in the second half as the Eagles outshot Maranatha Baptist 9-0, putting three shots on net.
The Eagles had opportunities to extend the lead early in the second half, but all three shots that were on net in the first 15 minutes were saved by goalkeeper Ginny Martin.
Martin made five saves in the contest for the Crusaders while Frisch recorded one save for the Eagles. Edgewood College also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
