STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Fans that attended the Edgewood College women's soccer at UW-Stevens Point got their money's worth as the home standing Pointers earned a narrow victory. The Eagles were outshot in the contest, but only allowed one goal. However, the Eagles could not put any points on the board, falling 1-0.
Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes. Only two minutes into the contest, UW-Stevens Point's Jennifer Jobke ripped a shot wide, which was followed by a corner kick. The Eagles (4-2) followed with a corner kick in the fourth minute that resulted in a
Kristina Santaga shot. Santaga's shot was saved by goalkeeper Brittany Marx. Her shot was also the only shot the Eagles registered that was on net.
The Pointers (4-1) then registered three shots in a six minute span. The first shot from Angela Gallow nearly gave the Pointers an early lead, but it hit the post, keeping the score tied.
In the 22nd minute, the Pointers register another scoring chance, but the Eagles' goalkeeper,
Kristi Frisch turned the shot away to keep the game scoreless. Frisch also stopped two more shots before the Pointers struck in the 41st minute.
Sammy Greer took a pass from Jobke in the 41st minute and rifled a shot that beat Frisch to put the Pointers ahead 1-0. The goal was Greer's fourth of the season.
UW-Stevens Point threatened to push the lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute, but Frisch came up with another save. The Pointers outshot the Eagles 15-2 in the first half, putting five shots on net.
The pace slowed a bit in the second half, but the Pointers still outshot the Eagles 6-3. However, the Eagles had an opportunity to tie the contest in the middle of the half. In a two minute stretch, starting in the 73rd minute, the Eagles took four corner kicks, but could not convert. On the final corner kick, Emiliy Berns headed a ball the got past Marx, but it hit the post to keep the deficit at one.
Shortly after that, Greer ripped another shot that was saved by Frisch, keeping the score 1-0 in the 76th minute.
The Pointers outshot the Eagles 21-4 in the 1-0 victory. Santaga recorded two shots for the Eagles and
Elaine Gerry accounted for the other two shots in the loss.
