PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team capped off a long week with a couple of tough matches at the UW-Platteville Tournament. The Eagles dropped their first match to Central College 3-0 before falling to Loras College 3-1.
In the first match, Central (7-1) began to pull away from the Eagles after the match was tied at 13. The Dutch took the lead and extended it to four points, taking the set 25-21. Just as they did in the first set, Central took control of the second set after a tie at 13, and extended their lead to 22-17. Edgewood College then tried to make a comeback, getting to within two points at 24-22, but the Dutch held on to take the second set 25-22.
After a service error in the third set,
Rachel Thomsen recorded consecutive aces and
Mallory Palmer registered a kill to put the Eagles up 8-4. Central began to chip away and finally tied the set at 13. The Dutch then held a 24-19 advantage before the Eagles made another run. With
Laura Sweeney serving,
Jessica Martin recorded back-to-back kills to make the score 24-23. However, Central scored the final point, taking the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.
Palmer led the Eagles with 12 kills while Martin chipped in with 10.
Lindsey Swansby dished out 31 assist to go along with 15 digs and Thomsen recorded 11 digs.
In the second match, Loras (4-4) jumped out early, and took the first set 25-20.
The Eagles (3-5) bounced back in the second set to even the score. Trailing 16-12,
Kaylin Wayne started a run with a kill.
Kristin Manske then served up an ace before Palmer recorded a kill and Wayne capped the 5-0 spurt with another kill. The Duhawks took the lead back and held a slim 24-23 advantage before the Eagles went on another urn. Martin tied the score with a kill, and then after a Duhawk miscue, she ended the 26-24 set win with another kill.
Loras came back with a convincing 25-16 win in the third set before taking the final set 25-12, and winning the match 3-1. The Duhawks hit .318 in the match, including a .500 attack percentage in the final set. Regan Riley led Loras with 27 kills in the match.
Edgewood College was once again led by Palmer and Martin who tallied 10 and nine kills, respectively.
Katie Wedvick also chipped in with eight kills while Swansby dished out 29 assists and recorded 15 digs.
The Eagles open their home season on Tuesday with the Edgewood College Triangular where they will host Maranatha Baptist and #19 UW-Platteville. The Eagles face Maranatha Baptist at 4:00 p.m. before playing UW-Platteville at 8:00 p.m. Edgewood College will provide both live stats and live video for all three contests.
