RIVER FOREST, Ill. – After having their conference tournament chances dashed on Sunday the Edgewood College softball team still had something to play for on Monday afternoon, to keep Concordia University Chicago out of the tournament. The Eagles jumped out early in game one, but could not hold the lead as the Cougars came back to take the contest 7-4. The Cougars kept that momentum going in their 5-0 game two victory to earn a berth in the conference tournament.
Emily Monson started game one with a bang as she doubled to left field to start the contest. After a groundout moved Monson to third,
Jessica Spitzer hit her third home run in as many games to put the Eagles (14-24, 9-15 NAC) up 2-0.
The Cougars (15-20, 13-11 NAC) were quick to answer, however, as Megan White drove in Taylor Golden with a double to cut the deficit in half.
After neither team scored in the second, the Eagles pushed the lead back to two as Monson singled to start the frame and came around to score on an error to put the Eagles up 3-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles turned a double play after a leadoff walk and it looked like they would get out of the inning with no runs scored. However, Golden walked and White tied the game with a home run to left center field. The Cougars then took the lead with four runs in the fifth inning that was highlighted by a Corrine Kuhn two-run double.
Edgewood College got one run back in the sixth as
Pam Sommer started the frame with a double down the left field line. After being sacrificed to third, she scored on a groundout to put the Eagles within reach in the seventh inning.
Karmen Dorshorst started the seventh with a one-out single before Monson walked. After an out, Spitzer walked to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. However, Sami DeFord got the final batter to groundout and give the Cougars the 7-4 win.
Monson led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-3 at the plate and was the only Eagle with more than one hit. She also scored two runs. The Cougars were paced by four players with two hits apiece.
Game two was a different story as DeFord shut down the Eagle offense, holding them to just two hits in the game. Concordia Chicago jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning on a Cassie Slechta two-run double.
Edgewood College threatened in the second inning as
Carlene DeCoster started the inning with an infield single. After she was sacrificed to second,
Nicole Kalscheur singled to right and stole second to put runners on second and third with only one out. However, DeFord got the final two outs to end the threat.
The Cougars then extended the lead to 4-0 with two runs in the third inning. Golden hit a sacrifice fly and White followed with a single to left center to give the Cougars a commanding four run lead.
Concordia Chicago tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and DeFord didn't allow a hit after the second inning, giving the Cougars the 5-0 win. DeFord threw all seven innings and struck out six Eagles while giving up just those two hits.
In her final games as an Eagle, senior
Monica Humphrey went 0-for-4 with one run batted in and one sacrifice bunt.
The Eagles finish the season with an overall record of 14-24 while going 9-15 in Northern Athletics Conference play.
