VERONA, Wis. – In their final home game of the season, the Edgewood College softball team wasted no time jumping ahead of Rockford College on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles scored in the first inning of game one and never looked back, in the 10-1 victory. In game two, the Eagles scored six runs in the first two innings, and took the contest 6-4 for the sweep.
Pitcher
Bria Hahn started game one with back-to-back strike outs and sparked the Eagle offense with a one-out double in the bottom of the inning.
Jessica Spitzer followed with a single and Hahn scored on an error by the catcher.
With Hahn still cruising in the circle, the Eagles (14-22, 9-13 NAC) extended the lead. It was the duo of Hahn and Spitzer that struck again as Hahn started the third inning with a single and Spitzer hit a home run to center field. With the bases loaded,
DJ Endres drew walk and
Emily Monson blew the game open with a two-run double to left center and the Eagles led 6-0 after three. The Eagles then extended the lead to 10-0 with four unearned runs in the fourth inning.
The Regents (11-27, 7-17 NAC) got on the board in the fifth with a single run to make the final score 10-1. Monson and Spitzer led the offense, as they both went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Hahn threw four innings and only allowed two hits, earning her fifth win of the year.
Edgewood College kept the momentum going in game two by scoring three runs in the first inning. Just as they did in game one, Hahn and Spitzer sparked the offense with a single and double to start the frame. Hahn then scored on a
Pam Sommer groundout and Spitzer scored on a
Carlene DeCoster infield single.
Monica Humphrey put the Eagles up 3-0 with a single to left field.
Karmen Dorshorst started a one-out rally in the second inning with a bunt single before stealing second. Monson drove her in with a single up the middle and after an out Spitzer blasted her second home run of the day. This time she took and 0-2 pitch and deposited it over the left field fence to put the Eagles up 6-1 after two innings.
However, the Eagle offense went quiet after that and the Regents started to chip away at the deficit. After scoring an unearned run the third inning, Rockford scored runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Kristi Durlak started the sixth with a single and scored on a double by Aria Ruotsi before Jessica Bjerning started the seventh with a double and scored on a Kayla Griffitt groundout.
In the 6-4 victory, Spitzer was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in and two runs scored. DeCoster and Dorshorst were the only other two Eagles with more than one hit as they had two hits apiece.
Charlie Leikness threw all seven innings for the Eagles and struck out five Regents while giving up four runs, two earned. In her final home games, Humphrey went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one run batted in.
