WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team ended their six-game losing streak in impressive fashion at Maranatha Baptist. The Eagles scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back, taking the first contest 23-2 while setting a school record for hits in a game. The scoring slowed a bit in game two, but the Eagles still came home with a 10-2 victory.
Karmen Dorshorst started the first inning eight-run onslaught with a single and promptly stole second. After
Bria Hahn walked, the pair stole second and third before
Jessica Spitzer lit up the scoreboard with a two-run single.
DJ Endres also came up with a two-run single later in the inning and Hahn drove in Endres to put the Eagles up 8-0 after the top of the first inning.
Maranatha Baptist (4-14, 1-9 NAC) got a run back just two batters into the home half of the inning. Autumn Peotter started the game with a triple and scored on a ground out.
The Eagles tacked on five runs in the second inning, coming on five separate run scoring singles. After Edgewood College (9-15, 4-6 NAC) scored three runs in the third inning, they scored seven more in the fourth.
Jessica Diaz came up with the bases loaded and crushed a double to right field that scored two to start the frame.
Charlie Leikness drew a bases loaded walk to cap the scoring and give the Eagles a 23-2 advantage. Every Eagle that batted reached base safely at least once while all but one recorded a hit in the 23-2 victory.
Brittany Andrews earned her first win of the season as she threw four innings and struck out two Crusaders. Dorshorst paced the Eagle offense from the leadoff spot as she went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and three runs batted in while Endres went 4-for-5 at the dish and drove in three while scoring three times. The Eagles pounded out 24 hits in the contest, which set a school record for hits in a game. The previous record was 22 against Dominican University on April 22, 2007.
The Crusaders took the lead in game two as Peotter led off the game with a single before she stole second base. She then scored on a Susie Prusak single to put Maranatha Baptist up 1-0.
However, the Eagles responded in the second inning as
Carlene DeCoster started the inning with a sharp single to left field. She later scored on an error and the Eagles recorded five run scoring singles to take a 6-1 lead.
Maranatha Baptist cut the deficit to four in the third inning, but the Eagles answered with a run in the fourth as Spitzer hit her third home run of the season. Edgewood College put the game out of reach in the fifth inning as
Jasha Gilbert, Diaz and Dorshorst all recorded run scoring hits to give the Eagles a 10-2 lead. Leikness came in a finished the game in the circle, giving the Eagles the sweep.
Gilbert earned her second career win, going four innings, and striking out two while only allowing two runs. Hahn, DeCoster and Diaz led the Eagle offense as they recorded two hits apiece while Diaz also scored twice and drove in two.
The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going as they face Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sunday, weather permitting. First pitch is schedule for 12:00 p.m. from Ceniti Park in Verona.
