FOREST PARK, Ill. – The Edgewood College softball team stayed on the road on Thursday when they tried to snap their modest four-game losing streak when they took on Dominican University. The Eagles took a two run in lead in the fourth inning, but the Stars scored the game's final seven runs taking game one 8-3. The Stars came back again in game two, scoring the final five runs en route to a 6-4 win.
After the first inning and one half was played in the blink of an eye, Dominican (12-4, 6-0 NAC) grabbed the lead. Melissa Summaria sparked a rally with a single to second base before she stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She scored when pitcher Jori Cicale crushed a double to left center.
The Eagles (7-15, 2-6 NAC) responded in the fourth inning as
Karmen Dorshorst reached on a one-out infield single.
Bria Hahn followed with a single up the middle before
Jessica Spitzer came to the plate. Spitzer blasted her second home run of the season to put Edgewood College up 3-1.
The lead was short lived however, as Dominican answered in the bottom half of the inning. Just as before, it was Summaria that sparked a two-out rally with another infield single. Cicale drove her in before stealing second and Jessica Honeycutt gave the lead back to the Stars with a two-run single to left center field. The Stars tallied three more runs in the fifth inning, two of which coming on an Emily Mahoney two-run home run and Dominican led 7-3 after five innings of play.
The Stars tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to take the contest 8-3. Cicale led the way for the Stars as she went 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs batted in and one run scored. She also pitched all seven innings and struck out nine Eagles. For Edgewood College it was Spitzer who went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and one run scored.
Just as they did in game one, the Stars scored first in game two, only to see the Eagles take the lead away. Spitzer led off the fourth inning with a single and
Carlene DeCoster reached on an error. Both runners moved to up a base thanks to a passed ball and
DJ Endres drove them in with a single to right field to give the Eagles the lead.
Jessica Diaz drove in
Kayla Rackow, who singled earlier in the frame to put the Eagles ahead 4-1 after three and one half innings.
However, Dominican wasted no time responding as Summaria doubled to score Mahoney in the home half of the inning to cut the deficit to one. Just as the Stars did in game one, they started another two out rally, this time in the fifth inning. Kristen Look drew a walk and Budz gave the Stars the lead with two run home run. Mahoney followed Budz's home run with a single and came around to score on a double to put Dominican up 6-4 after five innings.
The Eagles threatened to score as they put two runners on in the sixth inning, but Mahoney got out of the jam. She then sat the Eagles down in order in the seventh to give Dominican the 6-4 victory. Five different Stars accounted for Dominican's five hits in the game while Mahoney threw all seven innings and struck out nine.
Six different Eagles accounted for the Eagles' six hits, including Monson who extended her career-long hitting streak to 11 games in the loss.
The Eagles will stay on the road as they play Maranatha Baptist on Saturday. First pitch from Watertown is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
