MEQUON, Wis. – After being swept by Lakeland College on Saturday, the Edgewood College softball team tried to rebound at Concordia University Wisconsin on Wednesday afternoon. However, the Falcons had other ideas as they took game one 4-2. The Eagles scored first in the second game, but the Falcons responded and won the contest 6-1 for the sweep.
Concordia Wisconsin (15-5, 6-0 NAC) wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard in the first game as they tallied a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jannelle Schroder started the game with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. She later scored on a Cara Landherr single to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage.
After neither pitcher allowed a base runner in the second inning, the Eagles (7-13, 2-4 NAC) rallied in the third inning.
DJ Endres led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Endres then advanced to third on an
Emily Monson single. Monson stole second base before
Bria Hahn singled to centerfield, scoring Endres. The centerfielder misplayed the ball and Monson came around to score to put the Eagles ahead 2-1.
Hahn then sat down the Falcons in order in the third and the Eagles threatened to score in the fourth as
Monica Humphrey led off the frame with a double. She was sacrificed to third before
Kayla Rackow walked and stole second with one out. However, the next two batters could drive in the runs, giving Concordia Wisconsin some momentum.
The Falcons used that momentum in the next two innings as they tallied three total runs in the frames. In the fourth Abbie Goetsch doubled and Aly Pinkos pinch ran for her and advanced to third on a passed ball. Stephanie Kramer then drove her in with a sacrifice fly to tie the contest. Landherr started a two out rally in the fifth with a single before Goetsch doubled. Kramer then drove them both in with a single to put the Falcons up 4-2 after five innings.
The Eagles couldn't get a base runner in the final two innings as they fell 4-2. Hahn led the Eagles both at the plate and in the circle as she went 2-for-3 at the plate and pitched all six innings.
Monson and Hahn started game two with back-to-back singles before
Jessica Spitzer drew a one-out walk.
Carlene DeCoster gave the Eagles the early lead with a ground out as Monson scored on the play. After
Charlie Leikness sat down the Falcons in order in the first inning,
Karmen Dorshorst ripped a two-out single in the second inning. That hit turned out to the Eagles' last hit of the game.
After the Falcons went down in order again in the second inning, they exploded for three runs in the third inning. Sara Mihalo started the frame with single and came around to score on a Schroder single. Schroder scored when the next batter, Holly Zinnecker, ripped a double before she scored on a Goetsch single to put the Falcons up 3-1 after three innings.
Concordia Wisconsin then tacked on two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth, but starting pitcher Sheri Weidner didn't need those runs as she shut down the Eagle offense after the second inning. Weidner threw all seven innings, allowing only three hits while striking out one and walking one. With the 6-1 victory, Weidner earned her fifth win of the season.
For the Eagles it was Monson, Hahn and Dorshorst that recorded their three hits with Monson scoring their only run.
