VERONA, Wis. – The doubleheader between the Edgewood College softball team and Alverno saw both teams comeback from four run deficits to earn victories. Edgewood College worked out of a four-run hole to comeback and win game one 7-5 before the Inferno gave up four runs in the first inning and came back to take game two 9-7.
Jessica Spitzer sparked a two-out rally in the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line.
Pam Sommer then followed with a single to right center to put the Eagles up 1-0 after one inning.
Alverno (10-26, 7-15 NAC) was quick to respond as Stef Wilmore led off the top of the second with a double. After a pair of outs, Erika Wotnoske drove her in to tie the contest. Wotnoske later scored on an error and Kellee Laske drove in two more with a double to put the Inferno up 4-1. Wilmore struck again in the next inning as she hit her fourth home run to extend the lead to four.
However, the Eagles (12-20, 7-11 NAC) offense exploded in the fourth inning. With one out,
Carlene DeCoster singled to center field before
Monica Humphrey singled through the right side. After an out,
Karmen Dorshorst and
Emily Monson recorded consecutive RBI singles before the Eagles plated a three unearned runs. Sommer then gave the Eagles a 7-5 lead when she drove in
Bria Hahn with a single up the middle.
That turned out to be all the offense
Charlie Leikness needed as she only allowed one hit over the final three innings to earn the win. Leikness threw four and two-thirds innings in relief to earn her fifth win of the season. Monson, Spitzer, Sommer and DeCoster all recorded two hits to pace the Eagle offense that produced 11 hits in the game.
The Eagles started game two with three consecutive hits by Monson, Hahn and Spitzer, with Monson scoring on Spitzer's single. After Hahn scored on a wild pitch, DeCoster drove in Spitzer with a ground out and Humphrey put the Eagles up 4-0 with a single through the right side.
Alverno cut into the lead in each of the next two innings as Ashleigh Sagat drove in Wilmore to get the Inferno on the board in the second inning. The Inferno scored again in the third as Wotnoske ripped an RBI single to make the score 4-2.
After Leikness got the first two outs on two pitches in the fifth inning, the flood gates opened. Sagat drew a walk to start a two-out rally before the next batter reached on an error. A single then loaded the bases and Bre Hart drove in two with a single to right center and Laske put the Inferno ahead with a three-run home run to left center field. In the inning, Alverno scored five unearned runs to take a 7-4 lead.
The Eagles had an answer in the bottom half of the frame as
DJ Endres came up with a runner on second base. After working the count full, she ripped a pitch over the right center field to get the Eagles back within one run. The home run was the first of Endres' career.
Sagat then returned the favor as she blasted a two-run home run of her own over the center field fence to extend the lead back to three in the sixth inning.
The Eagles cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning as DeCoster drove in Monson on a fielder's choice. However, Alverno's pitcher, Jaime Villalobos sat the Eagles down in order in the seventh inning to give the Inferno their first win over Edgewood College. Villalobos also earned her first save of the season in the process. Hahn, Spitzer and Humphrey led the Eagle offense with two hits apiece while Monson drove in two runs.
Edgewood College will next be in action tomorrow against Benedictine University. Weather permitting, the games will be played a Veteran's Park in Verona with first pitch time of 11:00 a.m. Check
