FOND DU LAC, Wis. – After only playing a pair of games in the last two week, the Edgewood College softball team started their doubleheader at Marian University with a bang. The Eagles tallied three runs in the first frame and took game one 6-3. However, the Eagle offense was shut down in game two as the Sabres took a pitcher's duel 4-2.
With one out,
Bria Hahn and
Jessica Spitzer recorded back-to-back singles to start the Eagle offense. Hahn then scored on an error before
Carlene DeCoster drove in Spitzer on an infield single and Sommer scored on an error to put the Eagles up 3-0.
Marian cut the deficit to one run in the second inning as Nikki Ponticelli drove in Brooke Haen with a double and Emily Boehnlein singled to score Ponticelli and the Eagle lead was just 3-2.
The two teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning as
Monica Humphrey ripped a two-out single up the middle to score Spitzer. The Sabres scored an unearned run in the bottom half to make the score 4-3.
After a walk and a fielder's choice to start the sixth inning,
Emily Monson extended the Eagle lead with her second home run of the season as she blasted the ball over the left field fence to put the Eagles up 6-3.
Hahn only allowed one runner over the final two innings to earn her first save of the season and give the Eagles the 6-3 victory. Spitzer paced the Eagle offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored while Humphrey was the only other Eagle with more than one hit as she went 2-for-3.
Charlie Leikness earned her fourth win of the season in four and two-thirds innings of work. Leikness allowed only two earned runs and struck out two in the win.
The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel between Leikness and Cherise Watlz and Marian (10-21, 9-9 NAC) recorded the games first hit in the fifth inning. Monson gave the Eagles (11-19, 6-10 NAC) their first hit in the sixth inning.
The Sabres broke the scoreless game open in the sixth inning as Haen ripped a bases loaded double to put Marian up 3-0. Ponticelli followed with a run scoring single to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the top of the seventh, Sommer started a one-out rally with a single. Humphrey ripped a run scoring double to get the Eagles on the board and put runners on second and third. After an out,
Kayla Rackow drew a walk to load the bases. Next,
Karmen Dorshorst fell behind 0-2, but drew a walk to cut the deficit to 4-2. However, Waltz got the next batter to fly out to left and end the game.
Waltz threw all seven innings for the Sabres and gave up both runs on five hits. Leikness only gave up one hit in five innings of work while five different Eagles accounted for their five hits.
The Eagles will next be in action on Friday when they host Alverno College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Ceniti Park in Verona.
