VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball opened their home schedule with doubleheader against conference foe Lakeland College. The Eagles jumped ahead early in game one, but the Muskies came back and scored six unanswered runs to take the first contest 6-4. Edgewood College scored first again in game two, but Lakeland came back once again and held off a late Eagle rally to take game two 5-4.
Pitcher
Bria Hahn came out and looked to set the tone for the afternoon as she sat the Muskies (2-10, 2-0 NAC) down in order in the top of the first inning. The Eagle offense used that momentum in the bottom half of the frame as
Emily Monson started a rally with a single through the left side.
Pam Sommer and
Carlene DeCoster recorded run scoring singles before
Jessica Diaz drove in two runs to put the Eagles (7-11, 2-2 NAC) 4-0 after one inning.
However, Samantha Janc answered in the second inning with a leadoff home run to get the Muskies on the board. With two outs and a runner on second base, McKenna Wenzel singled to center to cut Lakeland's deficit to 4-2.
The score remained the same until the fourth inning when the Muskies recorded for three unearned runs. Heather Haeflinger came through with a clutch two-out two-run double to left center field to give the Muskies a 5-4 lead after four innings. Wenzel added an insurance run in the top of the sixth with a leadoff home run to extend the Muskies' lead to 6-4.
Hahn tried to spark a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh with a single, but Erin Henk got the final out to give the Muskies their first win of the season. Sommer led the Eagles, going 2-for-3 at the plate while Diaz drove in a team-high two runs. For the Muskies it was Wenzel who went 2-for-3 and drove in two while Henk threw all seven innings in the circle and struck out three and only walked one.
Just like in game one, the Muskies went down in order in the first inning, however, this time
Charlie Leikness was toeing the rubber. Monson started the Eagle offense with a single to left center to start the game before coming around to score on a DeCoster single to put the Eagles on top 1-0.
The Muskies were quick to answer again, however, as Chelsea Gile crushed a double to left center field that scored Henk, who singled earlier in the inning, and the game was tied at one.
After both teams went down in order in the fourth inning, Wenzel started a rally in the fifth with a one-out single up the middle. Lakeland then loaded the bases with two more singles, one coming on a bunt. Haeflinger came up with clutch hit as she laced a single to right field to score two runs and put the Muskies up 3-1 after five innings.
Janc started a rally in the sixth inning with a leadoff double to left center. After an out, Gile scored Janc's pinch runner to extend the lead to three. Lakeland than got an unearned run to push their lead to 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
DeCoster sparked a quick two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth with a single through the left side.
Monica Humphrey followed with and opposite field home run that cleared the right field fence to cut the Eagle deficit in half. Edgewood College had a chance to tie in the bottom of the seventh inning as
Karmen Dorshorst singled through the left side and came around to score when Hahn ripped a double down the right field line. However, Janc induced a fly out to end the game and give the Muskies the 5-4 victory.
DeCoster paced the Eagle offense as she went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring once and driving in a run while Humphrey drove in two runs in the loss. Leikness went the distance in the circle, giving up all five runs, four being earned while Janc also went the distance for the Muskies.
Edgewood College will try and rebound tomorrow as they travel to take on Concordia University Wisconsin. First pitch from Mequon is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
