FORT MYERS, Fla. – St. Patrick's day seemed to bring a little good fortune to the Edgewood College softball team as they took their first sweep of the season. The Eagles, who were wearing green socks, topped undefeated Brockport State 6-4 before beating the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth 3-2 in the night cap.

Brockport State (8-1) scored the first run of the game in the second inning as Amy Nowak ripped a double that scored Liz Hochman who singled earlier in the inning.

After being held without a hit for three innings, leadoff hitter Emily Monson sparked the Eagle offensive with a single to start the fourth inning. Later, Pam Sommer laced a double to center field to score Monson and tie the game before the Eagles took the lead. With runners on second and third Carlene DeCoster crushed a triple to center that scored both runners and gave the Eagles a 4-1 lead after four innings.

The Golden Eagles did not quit, however as they came back and cut the deficit to 4-3 when they scored two runs in the fifth inning. However, pitcher Charlie Leikness , who was pitching in relief, stranded the bases loaded to keep the Eagles in the lead.

In the sixth inning, Edgewood College answered Brockport State's two runs with two of their own. DeCoster laced a double that scored a run and she later scored on a Jessica Diaz infield single to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead going into the seventh inning.

The Golden Eagles plated a run in the seventh, but Leikness closed the door, earning the first save of her career and giving the Eagles the 6-4 victory. Monson went 3-for-4 in the game while Sommer and DeCoster recorded two hits apiece. DeCoster also led the team with three runs batted in.

Edgewood College (4-6) jumped ahead first in the game two against UMass-Dartmouth (1-7) as the Eagles scored in the third inning. Kayla Rackow started the inning with a bunt single before advancing to second on an error. Rackow was then sacrificed to third base and scored on a Jessica Spitzer sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Corsairs tied the game in the bottom half of the inning as Michelle Conway crushed a triple to left center that scored Elizabeth Mulready who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame.

However, the Eagles answered with runs in the next two innings. In the fourth inning, Diaz ripped a double down the left field line with one out before advancing to third on a ground out. Diaz then scored on a wild pitch to give the lead back to the Eagles. After an out in the fifth, Spitzer singled and advanced to second on a foul out to the catcher. She then scored on a Nicole Kalscheur single to right field and the Eagles led 3-1.

UMass-Dartmouth answered with a run in the fifth and threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Mulready led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Leikness then got a foul out and a strike to put the Eagles within one out of the victory. Then Diane Barry crushed a ball to center field that looked like it would tie the contest. However, DeCoster ran the ball down and ran into the fence as she caught the ball. In the process of taking down a piece of the center field wall, DeCoster held on, giving the Eagles their second win of the day.

Spitzer and Diaz led the offense with two hits apiece while Leikness earned her second save of the day. Jasha Gilbert earned her first career win in game two while Bria Hahn earned career win number one in the first game.

The Eagles continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic tomorrow when they play Amherst College and North Park University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. eastern time. Edgewood College will provide live stats for both contests with the link being found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
