FOND DU LAC, Wis. – In postseason play, games are usually won or lost on which team can create the better scoring opportunities. The Edgewood College women's soccer team created many opportunities, but Marian University created the best chance with less than 20 seconds left in the first overtime. The Sabres converted with five seconds left to take the game 1-0 and end the Eagles' season.
With just under 20 seconds remaining in the first over time, Edgewood College was called for a foul, that set-up a Sabre free kick opportunity from 25 yards out. Taylor Hozeska took the free kick from the right side of the field and put her shot in the upper left side of the net to move the Sabres (13-6) to the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Championship match.
In the first half, play went back and forth with both teams just missing on scoring opportunities. The Sabres recorded both shots in the half. Both shots were turned away by Eagle goalkeeper
Kristi Frisch.
Both teams recorded scoring chances early in the second half as
Molly Haertle had a shot saved by Caitlyn Rosenberger in the 54th minute and Frisch came up with another save just a minute later.
Mackenzie Klingert had one of the best opportunities for the Eagles (14-5-1) in the 58th minute. Her shot from 35 yards out sailed just over the crossbar. The Sabres then recorded three shots in the 67th minute, two were saved by Frisch and the other was blocked. The Eagles outshot the Sabres 6-4 in the second frame, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and the game went to overtime.
Edgewood College earned the first two scoring chances of overtime as
Elaine Gerry had a shot saved in the 93rd minute.
Kristina Santaga had a chance from a couple yards off the right post, but her shot was smothered by Rosenberger. Frisch came up with another save in the 98th minute and the Sabres sent a shot high a minute later. Hozeska then struck with the game-winner with just five seconds left to end the Eagles' season.
The Sabres outshot the Eagles nine to eight while Edgewood College had six corner kicks to Marian's four. Frisch tallied six saves in the loss and Rosenberger recorded seven saves for the Sabres. Santaga led the Eagles with three shots, putting all of them on net.
Edgewood College ends season with an overall record of 14-5-1, having not lost a home match all season.
