Eagles escape Benedictine with close win

LISLE, Ill. – Winning games in conference play is not always the easiest thing to do, especially winning conference games on the road. On Saturday, the Edgewood College women's soccer team played their first road conference game of the season and earned a 1-0 win over Benedictine University.

Scoring opportunities came few and far between in the first half, with Edgewood College (6-1, 2-1 NAC) taking five shots in the frame, and Benedictine (2-4, 1-2 NAC) registering four shots. Elaine Gerry took one of those shots for Edgewood College in the 10th minute, but it was turned away by Michelle Del Sarto, Benedictine's keeper. The other shot that was on net for Edgewood College came with three seconds left in the first half. Zenaida Cordova ripped a shot that was saved by Del Sarto to keep the score tied. Benedictine was able to take three shots that were on target, but all three were stopped by Edgewood College's goalkeeper, Kristi Frisch.

In the second half, Edgewood College's defense dug in as they did not allow a shot the entire frame. On offense, the Eagles took four shots at the opposing cage, with two being on net.

One of those shots came from the foot of Kristina Santaga in the 72nd minute. She ripped a shot from right side and deposited it into the back of the net to give Edgewood College the 1-0 advantage. Katie Pampuch had an opportunity to give the Eagles an insurance goal with four minutes remaining, but her header hit the post to keep the lead at one. Edgewood College controlled the ball from that point on to take the game 1-0.

Santaga led the Eagle offense with three shots and netted her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Frisch earned her fourth shutout of the season while stopping three shots in the win.

Edgewood College will take to the pitch again on Tuesday when the play at Marian University. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
