MADISON, Wis. – Sometimes the best remedy for a tough loss is to get right back on the field again. The Edgewood College women's soccer team put that axiom into action with a 2-0 non-conference over Beloit College on Sunday afternoon. A day earlier, the Eagles dropped a tough 1-0 match to Aurora in their Northern Athletics Conference opener.
The first half was a tale of frustration, as Edgewood College (4-1) had a number of scoring opportunities, but could not convert. Elaine Gerry and Molly Haertle each had breakaways, but both shots found the hands of Beloit College goalkeeper Kourtney Klingslien. Klingslien finished the match with 10 saves. The Eagles' Mackenzie Klingert found more frustration as two of her well placed free kicks shook the cage at Breese Stevens Field, one hitting the crossbar and the other the left post. Beloit College (1-4) and the Eagles went into halftime scoreless.
It didn't take long for the Eagles to break though in the second half. A minute and a half into second period, Kristina Santaga put the Eagles on the board. Gerry slid a pass from the short right wing that found Santaga in the penalty area between two defenders. Santaga beat Klingslien for her fifth goal of the season.
With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Edgewood College posted an insurance goal. Sophie Rodriguez slid a pass through the back line of Buccaneers' defense, and speedy freshman Katie Pampuch ran onto it. Free and clear, Pampuch scored her second goal of the season into the left corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Edgewood College goalkeeper Kristi Frisch was tested in the fifth minute with a shot at close range, but turned it away for her only save of the afternoon. Frisch picked up her third shutout of the season. The Eagles dominated the action, holding a 25-3 advantage in shots and 16-0 margin in corner kicks.
The Eagles will attempt to get their first NAC win of the season on Wednesday night when they host Concordia University Wisconsin. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. with a live video broadcast available on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
