MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team could not have thought of a better way to start their season. The Eagles took an early lead against Ripon College and didn't look back as they topped the Red Hawks 5-0 in the season opener.
The Eagles (1-0) put pressure on the Red Hawks (0-1) early and often as they put two shots on goal and another that sailed high in the first 10 minutes. Kristina Santaga then got the Eagles on the board with her first goal of the season in the 12th minute. Santaga took a cross from Janna Yost and deposited it into the lower left corner of the net to give the Eagles the 1-0 advantage.
Edgewood College extended their lead with two goals in 21 seconds in the 24th and 25th minutes. Freshman Mackenzie Klingert notched the first goal of her career as she ripped a shot from the top of the box that beat Ripon's keeper on the lower left side. Molly Haertle tallied the next goal 21 seconds later as she took a pass from Santaga and put it in the back of the net to give the Eagles the 3-0 lead.
Ripon's best opportunity to score came in the 16th minute as Rachel Martzahl shot a header that just went wide.
Edgewood College would put the game out of reach in the second half as Kelsey Beck tallied her first goal of the season. Beck took a corner kick from Tami Oilschlager and headed it in to extend the lead to 4-0 in the 56th minute. Zenaida Cordova recorded the first goal of her career in the 81st minute to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
In the victory, the Eagles ripped 27 shots, 10 by Santaga, to the Red Hawks one shot. The Eagles dominated in corner kicks too as they had 11 corners to Ripon's one.
Edgewood College will next be in action this weekend when they travel to Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. The Eagles will take on the Blue Jays at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
