Box Score

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The final non-conference game of the season for the Edgewood College baseball team certainly didn't work as a springboard for their final three Northern Athletics Conference games. The Eagles committed a season-high six errors and fell to UW-Platteville 15-2 at Kendall Murray Field.

Edgewood College (24-13), the sixth-ranked team in the Midwest Region, got off to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Steve Binder singled and eventually moved over to third base where Mike Selvaggi drove him in with an RBI single.

After the Pioneers tied the game at one, Binder singled again in the fourth. He scored from second base when an errant pickoff attempt by UW-Platteville (20-16) sailed into the outfield and a second throwing error by the center fielder Derrick Rice allowed him to scamper home.

However, the Eagles' wheels fell off in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. The Pioneers scored four unearned runs off Edgewood College starter Scott Winters, including the last two runs that scored on bases loaded walks issued to Levi Ney and Jason Jacobson. UW-Platteville added seven more runs in the fifth on three Pioneer hits and three Eagle errors. Ney had the biggest blow with a three-run double to make the score 9-2.

Binder went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, extending his hitting streak to a career-long 10 games. Selvaggi's second inning single also gave him a 10-game hitting streak. Jimy Landwehr went 2-for-2 to lead the Eagles' seven-hit attack. For Landwehr, his two singles were his 67th and 68th base hits of the season, moving him within one hit of Travis Krahn's school record for hits in a single season.

Winters fell to 6-3 on the season, giving up seven hits and 10 runs, although only four were earned. For the game, only five of the Pioneers 15 runs were earned. James Bertakis had the best outing among four relief pitchers setting UW-Platteville down in order in the eighth inning.

Edgewood College will have to refocus quickly on their ultimate goal; reaching the NAC Baseball Tournament. The Eagles will travel to Maranatha Baptist on Thursday for a rescheduled game, before hosting Lakeland College on Saturday as part of “Strike Out Cancer” Awareness Day. The Eagles will clinch an NAC Tournament berth if they win all three remaining conference games.
