VERONA, Wis. – In their third game in two days, the Edgewood College softball team took a 1-0 walk-off win over Concordia University Chicago, thanks to Rachel Elliott. The Eagles took that momentum into game two as they scored four early runs and didn't look back winning the contest 7-2.

Concordia Chicago's best opportunity to score in game one came in the second inning as their leadoff hitter got hit by a pitch. Then after two outs, Michelle Ciric ripped a double to right center that put runners on second and third. Pitcher Claire Blake got the next batter to ground out and end the threat.

Blake continued right where she left off yesterday as she only allowed four hits in seven innings of work while striking out four and walking none.

The Cougars' pitcher, Sami DeFord was equally impressive as she did not allow an Eagle hit until the fifth inning. Kristen Salvatore was the Eagle that uncorked the hit, which was a two-out double down the left field line. However, DeFord induced the next batter to groundout to end the inning and the threat.

With the game tied a zero in the top of the seventh inning, the Cougars (9-27, 8-12 NAC) threatened to take the lead. Clarissa Geiseke led off the inning with a double to left center field. However, Blake stranded her there as she got the next three batters to line out to Jessica Spitzer at shortstop.

Spitzer then led off the bottom of the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second by Colleen Joyce. Then Blake singled and Spitzer advanced to third before Salvatore reached on a fielder's choice to third base as Spitzer threatened to go home but made it back to third base successfully. The next batter struck out to bring up Elliott with two outs and the bases loaded. Elliott then took a full count pitch to right field, where the Cougars' right fielder made a diving attempt but could not hold on to the ball and Spitzer scored to give the Eagles (12-18, 9-9 NAC) the 1-0 victory.

Spitzer, Blake, Salvatore, and Elliott all recorded one hit apiece in the contest and Elliott drove in the only run. The game was played very clean as neither team committed an error and both teams left a combined nine runners on base.

Game two did not go the same as game one as Edgewood College started the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Emily Monson started the frame with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Karmen Dorshorst. Spitzer followed with an infield single and stole second before the next batter made the second out. Elliott then came up clutch again as she crushed a two-run double down the left field line. Salvatore ripped a single that scored Elliott before Pam Sommer capped off the inning with a double to center field to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead after one inning.

The Cougars tried to spark a comeback in the third inning as Caitlin Richards started the inning with a single before being sacrificed to second. She later scored on a DeFord single to right center field to cut the deficit to three runs.

Edgewood College extended their lead in the fifth inning as it was Monson again that started a rally, this time with a single. Dorshorst followed with a bunt single, and then Monson and Dorshorst stole third and second, respectively. Spitzer drove in the first run with a single and Dorshorst scored as Joyce reached on a fielder's choice and Spitzer moved to third. Spitzer scored the Eagles' final run on an Elliott ground out and Edgewood College took a 7-1 lead.

Concordia Chicago tried to make another comeback in the seventh inning as Cassie Slechta started the inning with a double to left center. Slechta then moved to third on a single and scored on an error to cut the deficit to five. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Eagles brought Blake back in to pitch and she only needed one pitch to get the final batter to line out to shortstop and give Edgewood College the 7-2 victory.

Dorshorst and Spitzer led the Eagles at the plate as Dorshorst went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Spitzer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one run batted in. On the day, Elliott drove in four runs, three of which came in the second game.

Edgewood College will play their final home game of the 2010 season on Thursday when they host Dominican University. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Ceniti Park in Verona.
