VERONA, Wis. – Just as Marian University and Edgewood College did when they faced off against each other in Arizona, they played another extra inning affair. The Sabres took game one in nine innings by the score of 3-1. However, the Eagles rebounded nicely to take a come-from-behind 9-6 win in game two.
Marian (15-12, 8-8 NAC) threatened to take an early lead in the top of the first inning as their leadoff hitter, Emily Wiesman, singled and advanced to third with only one out. However, Claire Blake got the next batter to strike out looking after a 10-pitch battle and induced a ground ball to end the inning and the threat.
The Sabres would plate the first run in the fourth inning as Maria Archie led off the frame with a double. She was then sacrificed to third base and scored on sacrifice fly to give Marian the 1-0 lead.
Edgewood College (9-15, 6-8 NAC) got their offense going in the sixth inning when Emily Monson started the inning with a bunt single. Karmen Dorshorst followed with a bunt single before they stole third and second, respectively. Colleen Joyce then drove in Monson when she ripped a sacrifice fly to left field to knot the score at one, and that was the way the game stayed until the ninth inning.
In the Marian half of the ninth, Archie led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. The next two Sabre batters ripped doubles and Marian took a 3-1 lead.
The Eagles threatened to come back and tie the score in the bottom half as Joyce walked to start the frame and then after an out, Humphrey singled to put runners on first and second. Nevertheless, the Sabres pitcher Jamie Whitehead got the final two batters to give Marian the 3-1 victory.
Blake threw all nine innings in the circle for Edgewood College and compiled five strike outs while walking no one. Humphrey paced the offence as she went 2-for-3 with a walk in the defeat.
Game two started almost the same was game one did as Wiesman started the game with a double and moved to third base on a sacrifice. However, Blake wiggled out of the jam again as she got a foul out and ground out sandwiched around a walk to end the threat.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the frame when Monson singled up the middle and was sacrificed to second. She later scored on a throwing error by the Sabres' first baseman to give Edgewood College their first lead of the day.
Edgewood College extended their lead in the third inning when Jessica Spitzer deposited her second home run of the season over the left field fence. Monson started a two-out rally with a walk, and then Dorshorst singled before Spitzer dealt the big blow to give the Eagles a 4-0 advantage.
The Sabres responded with a home run of their own in the top of the fourth inning as Brooke Haen hit a ball that bounced off the top of the fence and went over to cut the deficit in half.
After Spitzer doubled home a run in the fifth inning to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead, the Sabres responded with four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. Emilie Jansen came up with the big hit as she drove in two runs with a single to left field that tied the game and Emily Boehnlein gave Marian a 6-5 lead with a single back to the pitcher.
Edgewood College did not quit as they came right back and matched those four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Pam Sommer tied the game when she drew a bases loaded walk and Monson gave the Eagles the lead with a deep sacrifice fly to center field. Then Joyce tagged a bases loaded double to the base of the left center field fence to tack on a couple insurance runs and the Eagles led 9-6 going the seventh inning.
In the seventh, Blake struck out the first batter before giving up a single. She then induced back-to-back ground outs to end the game and snap the Eagles nine-game losing streak against Marian.
Just as she did in game one, Blake threw every inning for the Eagles and struck out one Sabre while walking one. Offensively it was Spitzer that led the way as she went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and one run scored. Dorshorst was the only other Eagle to record more than one hit as she went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
The Eagles will next be in action tomorrow when they host non-conference opponent UW-Stevens Point. Edgewood College will provide live stats and live video for the 4:00 p.m. start at Ceniti Park in Verona. The link for both can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
